Nice! I'm looking forward to this. I just really hope that you can't see future quest steps, or even how many steps it takes to complete a quest. That just spoils the fun of it.

In addition to the new questification of everything (YAY) and the quest page/inventory/manager, I'm also interested to hear what Deej says after playing the game as more than just a casual for a couple of weeks.

One of the more substantive thupdates (fridate though) of late.

The image that details the individual quest (House of Wolves) shows step 10, on page 1/1, and that definitely isn't the last step in the line. So, I'm guessing it doesn't tell you anything but completed and current steps.

So, a large number of our European city names come directly from French. Cologne, for example, or Bruges, when the people who live there have the names Köln and Brugge respectively, regardless of the native language. When we are speaking English, the general thing to do is to use the English name. Here in this article, it's Cologne and the Rhine river.

Now, while I accidentally in normal conversation say things in German (like place names or food items), I don't think I'd type it officially in some kind of thing for my job.

I know I may be on the wrong side of history here, I mean Treves is now known as Trier, the German name, and I personally prefer using the native terms for the cities when I can pronounce them, but we can't throw out English writing conventions for taste.

Otherwise, good update. Glad it has new info, and I like the new quest UI.

As an aisde, this is actually exactly what happens. When words form, or meanings change, it's never after intelligent debate and thoughtful consideration.

But to your point about the use of names. Geographical names for places are some of the most tricky, as they literally have different names. Now, you could argue that for writing purposes one should know their audience and write accordingly, but if you consider that, perhaps Deej wasn't talking to his native english speakers, but was in fact speaking to those that live in those locations. Eh? The USA isn't the center of the universe after all ;-)

You're correct, but deeJ chose to use these words with consideration. He assuredly didn't type those words just due to habit. And as for taste, it's still not the primary motivator of language change. Usually it's due to mistakes, ease of pronunciation, and needs of the speakers. Things like changing names for places long attested almost always happen through huge political shifts, like the Norman Invasion.

I also maintain we keep these English conventions for a reason, to make sure people understand what he's saying. While most of us could figure out Rhein is Rhine, Köln to Cologne is a bit harder, and he probably confused readers by writing that. It took me a couple days myself in Germany to realize Köln was Cologne. It's just not a good idea for effective communication. If he wishes to effect change or bring about new knowledge in his readers, he should have offered a translation.

I'm not a prescriptivist. I am far from it. However, this kind of thing, with the deliberate use of foreign words in lieu of the common English ones at the expense of ease of communication, annoys me. He really should use them both if he really wants to use the German words when his job is to communicate, in my opinion.

I tend to agree with you except I read it as he was addressing the people who actually live in those places (many of whom speak English but still might appreciate the native place names). It struck me as a courtesy, like when Mick Jagger gives a shoutout to a local team mascot when he plays in your town.

I didn't see the Stones on this tour, but they were here last week, and a friend of mine wrote a review for the local paper. According to him, Mick was apparently fed several things to say as a hat tip to the locals. I attended the local university, N.C. State, and we are called the Wolfpack (nscuDuncan respresent!).

At one point Mick said, "Does anyone here support the Wolfpacks?”

Heh, not quite right, Mick, but we'll take it.

I could be wrong, but I think it may be more along the lines of you get a quest for your class no matter what. I assume this because they are in the quest section instead of the bounty section (where it was just a single step in TDB).

Yes. That's how a sane and fair person would do it. But if you've followed Bungie's handling of Destiny up to this point, you'd know that's not their MO.

Lab-Rat and the button and the treat and all that.

Right but they already did the "Random class gets a bounty!" experiment and the rats didn't like it. And their MO HAS been to fix things that we complain about.

I think if the gaming press and the players continually and relentlessly mock them for such inclusions, maybe they will be embarrassed enough to stop. It's already gotten WAY better since launch.

I'd like to believe that, but experience has taught me that financial motivations take precedent with big projects. We can mock and complain all we like, but if their internal numbers are still good, and support what their "User Research" team has predicted, why would they stop or change?

What exactly are they missing out on? We don't know yet if it's just the same mission a different way, or a new one etc. If it is NEW then yes, I guess they miss out, but they can always help others.

Not to mention no one is keeping you from rolling the new classes.

How?

by Earendil, Friday, July 10, 2015, 18:41 (3662 days ago) @ Funkmon

Say Bungie alternates class quests every week. After three weeks, a single char player will have done one quest, and a 3 char player will have done 3 quests. Seems legit to me.

Alternatively, they could make every quest available to every char every week. At the end of the same three week period the single char player will have completed 3 quests, and the 3 char player will have completed 9 quests. Also seems fair, the frequency is just different.

Even if you rolled three of the same character class you'd come out with the same ratio.

"Hey, Raflection! Want to run the new quest?" "Can't. Only have a hunter."

It's not entirely dissimilar to people who only have one character now, but still. I assume the quests will differ slightly though.

My guess is that they're just like the existing "Quest" chains we have already. Thorn, being the example, is a sequence of tasks to complete for a single end goal. And in that regard the only quest-specific mission is Xyor, which you can bring friends along on.

Looking at the images, I get the impression that the class specific quests are there to force players to train in the abilities of their class. Take the golden gun quest for the hunter that they showed. It's all about trying to get players to learn to use the golden gun. In that respect it seems pretty similar to the grimoire cards where you get a bonus after doing the same kind of things.
