Not with the right timing/perks

by electricpirate @, Wednesday, July 15, 2015, 14:47 (3519 days ago) @ ZackDark

Spec your Titan right and you can slam across the battle field with incredible speed. Take the control perk for the jump, and hit the jets right before you land the jump.

ZOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM.

It's pretty much the highest speed of movement in game sans a vehicle, as it lasts longer and doesn't have the cool down of blink. Plus once the charge effect starts you feel even faster, and can tiger knee for the last bit of distance. You can also use it to super strafe by turning in midair then hitting the jets.

Why are you fleeing upwards when you have all that horizontal speed though? You can outrun literally everything but bullets as a Titan. Get round a corner.

Though if you do want extra vertical speed you can always spec Catapult. Works just like focussed burst, just with less foofing about.

Well, it depends, doesn't it

by Earendil, Wednesday, July 15, 2015, 15:33 (3519 days ago) @ someotherguy

If I can catch up to you "running around a corner" by jumping over something, than running fast isn't worth much, is it? :)

Sometimes jumping is the best option, and there are many maps where jumping is the intended path, for which there isn't a good alternative.

That's not a corner...

If I can catch up to you "running around a corner" by jumping over something, than running fast isn't worth much, is it? :)

I can think of very few places where that might be a real option. 3, at the minute. There might be more but the fact that you've stopped shooting to give chase means I've achieved the desired effect - you've stopped shooting me. And if you're able to stop shooting, get over the object fast enough to catch up to me and start shooting me again, I've run in the wrong direction or you were already way too close to me.

The more I think about it the less I like this hypothetical. How big is this object that it's faster to jump over it than it is to run out of Line of Sight? All you need to do is literally nip round the nearest corner. And if it's that large, why would jumping up, then being on top of it (still in LoS) then dropping off it be superior?

The original argument, as I understood it, was based on the premise that there exist places for which it's better to jump than run, and the argument was that because the titan is so stinking fast, it's better for a titan to run than jump. If you're suggesting that it's almost always better to run than jump, regardless of the class, than (whether I agree or not) I can see how that would apply to most maps and common lines of sight.

But I don't think I buy that the titan's faster movement provides it with a plethora of running instead of jumping options that just aren't available to other classes.

On the running vs jumping debate in general, jumping is almost always superior in my mind. Strafing requires the person shooting to use on one axis of control, and your head stays on the same plane. Jump strafing requires 2 axis's of control. The added bonus is that on many maps, jumping will remove your head as a potential target due to obstruction (even if your toes get blown off), while running will generally eliminate your toes as a target before it does your head.

I have a tendency of dodging shots. More often than not, jink and juke is what allows me to do it, by making the AI shoot where I won't be. The extra dimension helps a LOT. Regular jump doesn't quite work, because your upward speed slows down too fast for the AI to shoot much higher than you. This is where the double-jump shines.

As anyone who has played a Nightfall/high level PoE with can attest, I usually jump like crazy when rushing for the revive (usually doing that triple-tap Earendil talked about). With my Warlock, I have a pretty high rate of success.

With the Titan, that never works. I guess the Titan jump has too much inertia, which is great for linear horizontal movement, not so much for dodging.

I imagine I'd do great with a Hunter on that front, though.

Slow? (gifv examples of fast)

by Earendil, Tuesday, July 14, 2015, 22:07 (3519 days ago) @ ZackDark

I'm aware that staying airborn for multiple seconds in one place, as a warlock (and titan to a degree) can do is not always the best idea. But I've never found the jump to be "slow". It's no blink, but I hardly ever feel like "gee, time to slow down so that I can make a jump".

In fact, I prefer the jump because I can time the height such that my feet are back on the ground as soon as possible, and my head is no higher than it needs to be.

This is the lowest possible agility for a sunsinger warlock, but with a shotgun that provides +2. The jump is the "Focused Burst" that gives an initial boost in the direction of travel.

Warlocks dont have much choice in terms of Horizontal movement so they get a pass on their weird, arcing target-practice high jumps, but Titans have no excuse.

Any time I see a Titan just hovering about in mid-air I feel compelled to show them how to do it by skating underneath them and blasting them as they land. The only thing more infuriating is a Titan who doesn't know how to Shoulder Charge; You're making us look bad.

Warlocks don't warlock so well either

It seems most don't know, forget, or aren't practiced at turning their jump off. I rarely make a single jump without hitting my jump button 3 if not 4 times.

tap-tap: power jump.
tap: jump off, start faling
tap: Optional jump on, ease fall or glide down to target.

Titans choosing not to Shoulder Charge is fine. It's the Titans who come up six feet short, or somehow defy the auto-aim and charge in the wrong direction who upset me. Then my Shotgun upsets them.
