On the subject of spoilers (Destiny)
by Vortech , A Fourth Wheel, Thursday, August 06, 2015, 13:36 (3635 days ago)
A thought had been running around in my head about spoilers for the past few weeks and i've seen the idea pop up in a few places in the past week or so. All of the information that came out about the House of Wolves was interesting, but it left precious little to explore and discover once the game came out. I'd rather not repeat that part of the experience.
BUT, I do want to participate in DBO and the excitement of the new game information and learn information about the current game. I've fallen like 2 pages behind on DBO threads in part because I'm not sure what I'll find out or see if I click on the thread.
AND I don't want to rain on anyone's parade or have a chilling effect on people who want to talk about all of the information that they can find about TTK.
SO I was considering some stuff like a spoilers tag (the sworn enemy of the speculation tag?) but I don't even think we could expect to agree on what should and should not go there.
I think spoilers are anything that is in-game footage or stills from the PvE portion of the game; plot descriptions or events (beyond the general plot outline we got at E3, but possibly that only because I already know it); Casting; streaming video of gameplay and environments.
I think spoilers are not anything from the Crucible; anything that does not relate to the plot or narrative; anything that concerns gear or mechanics of the game; concept art or rendering…to a point.
What are your thoughts, fellow DBOer? What is a spoiler? What should we do about it?
(Really, I just want some way of knowing what is inside a link before I click on it, without ever learning what is inside it if it is something I don't want to know. I don't see why this logical contradiction involving clairvoyance is so much to ask.)

I've already been spoiled some in that I've learned something about the [REDACTED] and how the [REDACTED] will [REDACTED] my titan the [REDACTED]. It made me sad to learn that because it would have been so much cooler to find out in game. It makes me think about going dark for the next 5 1/2 weeks.
I agree, I don't want to read anything about PvE, especially if it's story/lore based. Now things like how many missions & strikes there are won't bother me.
Vendor changes, vault changes, shader changes, materials, etc. I'm find with learning about tho'. And these past few days have been amazing for stuff like that, unfortunately it was also in this coverage that I read that [REDACTED] that made me sad.

Yeah, I actually agree about that. Hopefully there's still some interesting revelations within the mission. Even knowing that little detail (which sounds awesome!) takes away from finding out in game.

you really don't mind finding out about the rewards (gear/weapons) for completing the PvE content? a surprise new weapon type drop at the end of a mission would be a big spoiler for me.
Idea: if Beorn can let us filter out systems on the FTB, maybe he can let us filter out speculation/spoilers. is that functionality already built in and it just comes down to getting people to tag their posts?
Idea#2: if we can get people not to put details in subject lines it should be easy to skim forum and choose what not to read

I like idea #2. Please use *SP* tags. :)

I really don't. But I knew that each of us will have a different set of things we consider bad to be spoiled about. That's why I wanted to hear everybody's opinions on this.

Personally, I give zero fucks about spoilers. They don't matter to me at all. I totally get why they matter to some people, but I've always been of the opinion that a truly powerful moment in storytelling is equally powerful whether it not you know it's coming. It's not what the characters do or say, it's how they do or say it. The look on their face, the tone of their voice, etc. I knew the entire plot of The Last of Us before I played it, and it didn't harm the experience for me 1 bit. If anything, I enjoy it more each time I play it because the less I need to focus on following the plot, the more I can pay attention to all the tiny little character details that make it such an evocative story.

I understand the challenge. I tend to avoid the relevant B.Org forum for some time up to a release and then until whenever I finish the new content. I've been taking in the latest Game Informer news because I haven't been playing Destiny as much lately and this stuff is really re-energizing me. I'll be avoiding anymore PvE stuff, though.
Going into your user profile and clicking on every thread category except "Destiny" will likely filter out most of the big news, but you'll also be cutting out a big swath of the forum. We could add "Spoilers" as a category but that would also require people to select and use it, so you'd still have to be on guard.
I'm a big opponent of unwanted spoilers. But when you enter a Destiny forum around a release, it tends to say 'I want spoilers', so it gets rather tricky. :)

That also doesn't guard against spoilers that arise in the middle of a thread.

The biggest problem with categories is that they encompass the entire thread. For now, let's use *SP* tags on our posts if spoilers are inbound.
Still working on the "spoiler" button…

So in the past...

I've noticed a general consensus here and at HBO that official-Bungie-released information was not a *SP*, while info coming from leaks and early-players was a spoiler.
Are we saying *SP* here for story content or just new info in general?

That's such a tricky issue. I don't plan on going dark, so if I post anything I will try and designate *Story SP* or something like *Gameplay SP* for things like gear or content or gameplay changes and such.

Definitely story content, but I think there's a lot of info in the Game Informer article that folks could construe as "I didn't want to know that yet."
Even then, going forward, I think there's some stuff from Game Informer that will slip into the Bungie updates that folks aren't going to want to know about.
I think folks can just use discretion and tag their posts if they think there might be spoiler content.

I went in expecting mostly talk of mechanical changes and general plot outline, but they completely spoiled something Titan-related (arguably a mechanical spoiler, but very much tied into the narrative) and I'm kind of bummed I won't get to experience the surprise by myself.

Thank you!!
I'm really hoping that mission is awesome, and it reveals some lore about the rogue Titans. I do think it sucks that they even mentioned rogue Titans at all; that would have been such an awesome thing to encounter while playing without knowing about it.
Obviously we don't know how the mission plays out, but I hope there's more to it, and hearing about the Titans isn't actually such a huge spoiler.
can you post the GI article please?

Yeah I don't think Raflection realized it's an article from the actual subscription magazine :) But yeah, otherwise it would already be posted!
Admittedly, I do find it surprising...
by Earendil, Thursday, August 06, 2015, 16:01 (3635 days ago) @ Xenos
...that this day in age Magazines are still produced as heavily as they are, and that GAMING magazines of all things are still being bought. Sure, I can see how some content still has an audience in the print additions, but gamers? Back on dial up half my reason for being on the internet was for game related news and information. 20 years later I still haven't bought a game magazine and am shocked every time it comes up in conversation and in the forums.

I really like holding things, smelling the glue and ink, and most importantly taking a break from staring at a screen, which I do all day. I also don't own a smart phone so a magazine is more far convenient than trying to hook my PC up next to my toilet. :)
That said, I haven't actually read a fun gaming magazine (or found a comparable online experience) since the 90's when I had a subscription to EGM...

Hover your mouse over this business:
Check out my awesome spoiler: Nolite facere nos culos vestros calcitrare
If you can see the Latin text above by default, you'll need to force a reload of the CSS (holding Shift and reloading a couple times usually does the trick).
Additionally, there's a "spoiler" button in the posting tool and a "Show spoilers" checkbox in the top right corner that hides/unhides all spoilers on the page. The setting isn't saved to your account yet (server-side database stuff takes a bit longer to deal with), but that's coming in the future. Hopefully this works for now.
As with all other formatting tags, [spoiler]
does not work in titles.
