A Tale of Woe (Destiny)

Since I've moved, I use my upstairs neighbors/landlord's WIFI. Where I was before, I was spoiled with wired-in connections for my PS4 and PC.

In the past week the wifi has been really spotty. Dropping a lot. For whatever reason, my PS4 can keep a better connection going than any of my other devices.

I got home late Monday night and decided to see if I could get some stuff done before the reset. I was hesitant of doing a raid or anything where people would depend on me, so I did a handful of Queen's Bounties solo. I didn't drop the whole time, so I finally decided to do a level 32 PoE on my main character.

Got a great team of randoms; I think we only went down a few times throughout the entire game. Took down the boss fast.

We returned to the airlock. I started my ritual dance on the grate that opens up... I got a Baboon error. No! Not now! Black screen, loading screen, I'm back in the game! My guardian is still dancing on the grate.. with 2 seconds left until return to orbit. I try to drop down the shaft but nope, don't even make it to the bottom.

I managed to keep connection throughout the entire game and only lost connection in the 28 seconds I had to grab my reward.

It upset me more than I expected.

Spotty wifi is worse than no wifi at all...

Nah, don't be. I do it all the time with a dumpy connection.

Um, does your landlord know this?

When I moved a few years ago, it was going to take a few days for Time Warner to hook up the internet. So I scanned for open wifi networks hoping to find one, but didn't have luck. Our neighbor though, was using WEP encryption, and after about 15 minutes of packet capture, I was able to crack the password with KisMac (it was her phone number).

The moral is, try scanning for networks encrypted with WEP that have a better signal :-p

FYI this is also super illegal so don't get caught.

Heh, I do get a better signal from my neighbors network "The Magic Bus", which also sounds a lot more fun than whatever generic alphanumeric code my network has.

Kismac can crack WPA, but that takes days (possibly weeks) versus seconds for WEP. WPA2 is uncrackable.

When he finally gets his own internet he should encrypt with WPA2 and use at least one Chineese character in the password for good measure.

I find WEP quite useful

See, if I use an open wireless network to lure strangers into letting me packet sniff their traffic, I find the average traffic to be quite dull. However, if you put a WEP password on it then suddenly the only traffic you get is above average, and I feel more justified @#$%ing with them.

Sadly, I don't actually do this, but now that the thought has occurred to me I might try.

I used to use WEP security as a legal cop out for being responsible for what was done with my internet connection. *gasp* it-isn't-all-that-secure-I-didn't-know-that-your-honor. Now I stay away from anything shady on the internet and use WPA2 :)

would a range extender work?

by Schedonnardus, Texas, Wednesday, August 12, 2015, 18:07 (3489 days ago) @ marmot 1333

there is an android app called "wifi analyzer" there's also a windows version in the windows appstore (not sure about iOS). It shows all the available networks and their signal strengths. Try walking around your apartment and find the optimal place for either A) your xbox/ps4 or B) to place a range extender.

I've never tried playing on a range extender, so i have no idea what that will do to your ping, or % packet loss. just an idea though.

Better than nothing

I used to play on a range extender. sometimes it was better if I were further away, but sometimes being closer but still with low signal was actually better.

I looked into that a little bit.

I wasn't sure how effective it would be since I don't have physical access to the current router/wifi broadcaster.

The cable guy was supposed to come yesterday but last night the wifi was even worse :(

Once the basic problems get resolved, I might get a repeater/extender.

The Return of the Wifi

by marmot 1333 @, Thursday, August 13, 2015, 14:30 (3488 days ago) @ marmot 1333

I got it all worked out. It was mostly a matter of a bad signal. Compounding the problem was software conflicts between the different drivers that came with my USB Wifi Dongle.

The confusing thing is that it worked fine for about 4-5 days before giving me any trouble, and even when I had trouble the ping times would be wildly inconsistent. Perhaps upstairs neighbors moved the router at some point?

My solution involved attaching my USB wifi Dongle to a USB extension cord and then getting that Dongle as close to the ceiling as possible. I also elevated the PS4 as high as possible and moved any potential signal-blocking object (in this case a speaker.)

Pinging my local router went from ~75% drop rate with ~1100+ ms response to 0% drop rate with 3ms response. That'll do.
