Huge thanks to bluerunner and Speedracer. Their expertise got us through with only one wipe in the Cabal round. Skolas wasn't as bad as the horror stories I've heard, (I know it varies week to week) and was actually a really fun encounter I though he was more enjoyable than Kaliks).

I'm actually looking forward to trying this again with my hunter, and of course the chance of getting another Elder Cipher!

I've seen a lot of posts here of successful Skolas victories last night, which is awesome.

I also ran it last night and got my second Elder Cipher. That feeling when you dismantle the last mine and everyone makes it back under the stairs--no, Skolas isn't dead yet, but at that point you have won. The rest of the battle is just a formality.

I just did the same thing last night. First time I've played Destiny in a month, and my two friends who still play were willing to go with me. I'm pleased to say that I held my own in the entire PoE and my sniping skills seem not to have suffered from the time off.

I also now fully agree with the opinion that there should be checkpoints in that event, at least before Skolas.

Also, my whole fireteam got elder ciphers, which is awesome. Design note: I was warned beforehand to have an empty bounty slot (two, actually, though I only needed one in the end). Are people with full bounty slots just screwed if the Elder Cipher would have otherwise dropped? Or does it show up in the mail?

Bungie said they fixed that 2 months ago. It seems to have gone under most players' radar, though, because I still hear this advice pretty frequently.

Glad to hear this was just superstition.

I got a cipher from a 34, but haven't gotten one from a 35. It's getting frustrating because I just want 1 more. Last night I got a solar Wolves Leash, which is pointless compared to VoC. Why won't you give me a cipher, Variks?

Mine showed up in the mail, because my bounty slots were full.
