"Quests" (Destiny)

Sorry to say, but the "Quest" aspect is shit (so far).

Step 1: Kill 50 enemies under radiance.
Step 2: Make 25 orbs.
Step 3: Do I care?

This is not a quest. A quest is an exciting adventure. An interesting task. These are bounties. Doing easy things a bunch of times is not fun. Making more bounties and calling them quests is not fun.

The full game had better have quests that are actually interesting. I really hope the real thing is better, and that Bungie actually learned some stuff.

I felt like it was pretty likely this is what it would be. I do think (hope) that we'll also get some interesting quests, but when they talked about reworking and "questifying" old content, I wasn't expecting anything more than what amounts to bounties by a different name.

This is why I was always baffled when people cheered on the Thorn bounty as such a great quest, and cringed every time Bungie said they are using it as inspiration for the new quests.

The Thorn 'quest' was mindnumbing and I don't understand anyone that thinks it 'told a story'?...

It wasn't the actual tasks that I thought was a good direction but the format. It at least allows for some storytelling where random bounties and lootdrops give nothing. With each step, you get some connection to the larger world through some lore or characterization.

Utilizing that format going forward (and now backward), it gives a hundred more opportunities to learn about Destiny's world with little bits of flavor and facts. Obviously if the actions you must complete are also fun, that would be great. :)

Bungie has said they have reorganized everything - big and small - into the 'quest' format that evolved out of Dark Below and furthered in House of Wolves. That is what they meant by 'quests' - the format. Some will be little tutorials, some will weave us through the storyline and have cinematics.

What I believe you are specifically referring to here are the only quests I had available on my main character - and those are subclass introductions. These are not meant to be epic adventures; they're meant to get new players introduced to new subclasses (which we, long-term Destiny players, already have, but since they have just been added, they're still an option for us to grab).

Bungie has said they have included tutorial quests like these to introduce new players to Crucible and tour modes they have never tried, etc.

The full game had better have quests that are actually interesting. Sad to see Bungie did not learn a single thing.

And these are the kind of sentences that I don't reply to.

Have you ever played MegaMan? Mario? Those games are great at doing just that without being boring. Levels are structured as tutorials without you knowing it. You don't have to make people do boring things to teach them how to play your game.

I agree. The Pillar of Autumn introduced the basics to you slowly and finished with a heap of grenades. Vehicles and long-range combat came in the next level. And similarly, the first few levels of Destiny are designed with the timing of grenade unlocks and more.

But Destiny has at least six (soon to be nine) basic ways to play the game. Because of this variance, extra little tutorials that help a new player catch all the different details and numbers that are in this game could be helpful to some people.

Most relevant to this conversation, we got these quests out of context. A new player would pick up these quests early in the game and wouldn't necessarily have to do anything out of the norm or boring (which is subjective) to complete them. They could all be done while playing the story quests, while still calling some attention to the sub-classes. Because they have been added with the patch, we are getting them some 30 levels late.

And if you don't find these specific quests fun, you don't have to play them. I sure as don't get every bounty. I don't find them all fun.

The game will suddenly turn bad because its quests are rebadged bounties?

The purpose of Quests in Vanila

by electricpirate @, Tuesday, September 08, 2015, 23:14 (3601 days ago) @ Cody Miller

I always found the bounties and quests in Vanilla were less about "Epic Journeys" and more about getting you to try out and play content in some different ways, importantly teaching you some great mechanics along the way.

That was what the thorn bounty mostly did for me, it taught me how to play the MP properly, then gave a good instruction on the exact effects of the mythic skull. It made me look at existing content a little differently.

IT sounds like the quests in the final are going to embrace a bit more new content, with the quests that end in the vault, and Petra's Quest giving story details.

It sounds like these are continuing that system though, with some bounties designed to help you explore your abilities, and I believe they follow up with a short mission where you get to explore your super.
