88 metascore (Destiny)

by Kermit @, Raleigh, NC, Wednesday, September 16, 2015, 12:54 (3453 days ago)

Significantly better than the original Destiny (and better than ODST, but ODST's score is whack).

From only four critics! Users say 4.3.

by DreadPirateWes, Wednesday, September 16, 2015, 13:39 (3453 days ago) @ Kermit

The user reviews here are far more persuasive IMO. I haven't bought it yet because I've kicked the destiny habit at the moment, and was waiting to hear what it's like. The user reviews make it sound just like TDB and HoW -- 2 hours of leveling and a couple new maps. All the polish they did is great, but I've got that now for free.

Setting aside any preferences or thoughts of "good" or "bad", TTK is vastly different from the previous 2 DLCs. Anyone claiming otherwise is just trolling.

Nah, even I have to say that's wrong. After playing through the story missions and doing a few quests, it's clear that there's a shit ton of fun (not grind) stuff left to do. This is the kind of thing I was expecting when Bungie had said in 2014 that Destiny begins at level 20. I truly feel like the story was just the warmup for everything else.

I mean, the Patrol mode has tons of secrets…

I played for 8 straight hours last night and I still have a bunch of Taken King quests left. And I haven't even been in the dreadnaught patrol other than placing the beacons yet. Not to mention the raid, pvp, etc. There's really no comparison between TTK and year 1, even if you lump ALL the year 1 stuff together, it would be hard for me to say TTK still isn't better.

Alright, I guess I'll try it out then. Thanks to all for quickly persuading me.

Just found it interesting, as meaningless as it is at this point.

Nah. Each mission has a lot more going on than any Destiny 1.0 missions. Heck, the missions have more going on than most of the 1.0 - HoW Strikes. And most of the missions have intro and outro cutscenes. And when you get done with the main story the game really does open up this time. I've got missions and quests and strikes and patrol events lighting up multiple destinations in every planet now. And it's not just trivial things left after the main story. Some of the patrol quests, even, were multipart and we're kicking my butt.

Basically, it's where it should have always been and a bit more. :)

This is the game I was expecting a year ago. Just freaking amazing in general. I can't believe how much fun I had yesterday during the game.

I think the only thing I didn't care for was having to travel back and forth from quest to tower just to talk to someone again. This is probably more to do with the fact that I played so much yesterday and had to do it repeatedly if I wanted to keep progressing in the story line.

Me, too

I bought it based on what I read here yesterday and I had SO MUCH FUN last night playing through the story and a couple of side activities. It really feels as if that only scratches the surface of what's on offer. The opening cutscene, by itself, is better than the entire story of Destiny 1.0. And it just gets better and better. The fights were super fun and interesting, the strikes feature some neat mechanics, etc. etc. There were constantly new things and I was repeatedly surprised by how the game was playing. Also, the Taken, as enemies, are really fun to fight against. Quite varied with some really interesting powers (Taken Captains... holy cow).

Even I have to say those user reviews are wrong.

Destiny still has a ton of problems with its core loot system and RNG mechanics that The Taken King doesn't address, but as far as content goes, this expansion is well worth the $40 they're charging for it. There's a ton of stuff to do, and it's actually good too!

You aren't kidding. Fighting three or four of those at once in the Vault of Glass?!?! That was some of the most exciting and terrifying gameplay I've ever experienced.

Yep, that part was rough. As was the mission where you go to the Cosmodrome to kill the witches, but you have to clear the four Taken rifts first. It took me four or five tries because there were just so many enemies in that area.

Also, I want to find out what the limit for Consumed Psions splitting are. Like, how many copies will they make if you just let them go at it?

But I forgot to count. Around 8, but I couldn't go all scientific on it, due to the Taken Knight shooting me too.
