I'm using mine as a savings account. When Iron Banner comes around I'll start turning them in to the Speaker for glimmer to buy armor.

Doesn't it cost glimmer to convert energy?

Doesn't it cost glimmer to convert energy material into shards which can then be glimmered as well? Is the exchange rate like going from GBP to USD?

50 to convert, but you get 250 back.

Good call!

Not right now. Turn em into motes for faction packages.

I do the exchange for motes, too, not for glimmer. I don't cash in glimmer drops with the Cryptarchs unless there is something time sensitive to purchase. I'll just use glimmer consumables while doing patrol missions.

I currently have 35,100 in glimmer drops in my vault.

Motes are way more worth the exchange rate. Especially for leveling factions and speed leveling all your equipment.

You and Funk both said this - can you elaborate? I'm not sure how to use them. Thanks!

Go to speaker -> Exchange materials for Motes

Go to faction -> Donate Motes for rep

This I knew about.

Go to faction -> Donate Motes for rep

Hmm... I guess I never noticed an option for that. I'll take a look. Thanks!

I think it's new as of 2.0? You can also donate the ammo consumables and maybe other stuff.

What I hadn’t realized…

…is that faction Rep also applies XP to gear/weapons. I usually consider those to be separate counters. I thought that these new mechanisms were just for boosting our rank with each faction, so this is huge. Thanks for the heads-up!

Hmm. I'm not 100% sure it does. I turned in a bunch of commendations yesterday, and my gear didn't budge an inch (though my faction rep went up several levels).

Are you saying that different ways of increasing faction rep have different effects on XP?

I have no idea what I’m saying. Actually, now I’m confused.

The idea that turning in Motes to faction vendors to level equipment is completely new to me. I haven’t been able to sign in and try any of these today, but I thought those “turn-in” options were exclusively for reputation gain. Others have said otherwise, so now I don’t know.

I leveled up Dead Orbit four or five times yesterday but I don't remember any of my gear leveling up...

Some people might be typing confused advice online. You can consume motes to level gear, just go into your menu and press X, OR you can dump them into Dead Orbit. They don't work together.

Thanks for clarifying, Funkmon! I hadn't even tried to hover over the Motes since they didn't do anything before. Dur.

The follow up posts cover the faction rep, it's with the synth and materials. Wish I could exchange planet materials, though.

I do the leveling by using motes from the inventory, which applies experience to all your equiped gear. I often use them to get the first couple perks/new sight/barrel to try out new guns a little faster.
