Reviews across the board positive (Destiny)

It appears that Destiny has things like a story and other sensible things now, so I guess it's almost time to dip my toe in the water again... The question is how long do I wait for TTK to get discounted do you guys think? I'm not paying twice for the game I thought I was getting the first time so I guess I'll wait for some kind of combo package, but that might be a while... Thoughts anyone?
Also, good on you Bungie for righting the ship somewhat (I hear/read). I was worried for a while that you wouldn't get it together, but I'm still side-eyeing you for the absurdly overpriced DLC. I get that you probably can't release TTK for free but... I'm not going to give you full price for it.

I say buy it now or don't bother with Destiny anymore.
The fact is, The Taken King is more of the same, just polished. If you didn't like Destiny, you won't like the DLC pack for Destiny. The longer you wait, I think the less the experience gets you. I killed Crota on hard in one sword yesterday. Who wants that? Well me. But it ruins the experience. Be there from the beginning on this or don't be there at all, IMO. Come by for Destiny 2.
EDIT: I say this knowing your posts and what you say about Destiny. If I were you, I'd move on. However, I think The Taken King is a bargain at twice the price, and would suggest it to all Destiny fans. Unless you show it some weird way, you're not a Destiny fan. Skip it.

About 5 minutes of playtime into the expansion the cryptarch gave me a Hawkmoon and I'm still disappointed. That should tell you something.
I had moved on and not really played Destiny in 1-2 months, but I was swayed yesterday by people saying how much better it is. However, this one just feels like any of the other expansions... some of the "new levels" are just playing old levels in reverse. Even the ones that are "totally new" still feel like re-used environments with structures moved around a bit and some lighting/music changes. The new music and cut scenes are nice. The quests are very visual now, which is good and bad. My new class is cool, but the game feels pretty much the same, just a little better.
I can sense that after about 2 more hours of playing I will be back in the grind to get the new marks. I'm not sure I want to get sucked into that again.
PS It'd be nice if the exotics said their max #. When I got my 160 Hawkmoon I thought it was an expansion Hawkmoon and I'd get it up to 300 or whatever the new max is. I mean, why is he giving out old, junky Hawkmoons???

My advice? Don't worry about your gear, it will be more than adequate for the default difficulty of the main story. I played through the main story using my year 1 monte carlo just for the fun of it. You should just play the quests that interest you and have fun with them and then put it down after you're done with the quests (I have no idea how long that will be as I still have TONS of quests to complete myself).

... why? This makes no sense to me.

This is where you're way off. With Destiny 1, you'd reach the end of the story and the game said "ok, now just do all that stuff over and over and over, until you get better gear that lets you do the 1 or 2 end game activities".
In TTK, you reach the end of the story and realize oh, that was basically just the intro. There is tons of new content, missions, and quests that you don't get access to until you've finished the story. The activities are varied and lack the repetition that plagued D1. And then there is the Dreadnought, which is quite unlike anything else in the game.
PS It'd be nice if the exotics said their max #. When I got my 160 Hawkmoon I thought it was an expansion Hawkmoon and I'd get it up to 300 or whatever the new max is. I mean, why is he giving out old, junky Hawkmoons???
He gave you a weapon that matched your character's level. How is that junky? On top of that, the weapon level doesn't matter in most crucible modes, and crucible is where Hawkmoon shines. Plus, not that you have the year 1 version, the year 2 version is available for you to buy from the exotic blueprint terminal if you wish.

I agree completely, and it's even more true now than ever. It will be awful for new folks in a few months (weeks? days?) when the internet has everything in the Dreadnaught figured out. I've had a great time with some DBO folks. We spent hours on the Dreadnaught last night, and stayed in the Mausoleum, Hull Breach, and Cabal ship area, and figured out two neat little things there.
A lot of the experience will be lost when everything is know.
It'll be like being led through a Raid, rather than figuring it out with a blind group, only it's true for an entire area.

With how well it'd doing probably going to be awhile. I would guess for a discount more than $5 off it'll be Black Friday at the earliest.

That's fair if you didn't think Destiny was worth $60. But if (as many of us do) you thought Destiny by itself was worth $60, TTK plus the previous 2 expansions are EASILY worth $60. It's obvious you don't, just throwing it out there, the expansion is not overpriced to the millions of people that have enjoyed Year 1. Heck just the main storyline from the TTK is better than most FPSes out there. I honestly think it would be insane if they'd charged much less than $40 for TTK.

From Forbes.com
Destiny's "The Taken King" is not worth $40, it's worth $60
Just a friendly suggestion: I think you (and everyone else) should stop looking at TTK as "making up for D1" or "fixing the game". It is a new game. Full stop. I've already put more time... genuine quality time... into TTK than I ever put into most new $60 releases. It is a fantastic experience, well designed and put together, with a substantial amount of new activities to do. After almost 10 hours with TTK, I haven't had to repeat a single activity, and there is no end to the new content in sight.

I've put 18 hours in, and I'm still not done w/ new content

So much this on my end. I would have to say that I find that it's the reverse of the ODST snafu, regarding the cost - not the value. Most people thought ODST would be an expansion, just a 30-40USD game. Instead it was billed at 60USD and was, if you ask me, a fair price given the market.
TTK is pretty much a 60USD game - I've barely scratched the surface and feel I've gotten a fair value in that consideration, and getting it at 40USD? That's a steal for something this fresh.
But it is still Destiny. The core game hasn't changed. Presentation and feel have changed.

It feels like Borderlands crossed with halo reach. The humor, progression, and quest presentation reminds me of borderlands, the art, music, and mission layouts reminds me of halo.
Some of the music feels like it should be on the halo reach soundtrack. I love it.

I think the key is whether or not you enjoyed the base Destiny experience. For those of us that did, TTK is absolutely amazing. For those that didn't, it does fix/change some things, but it's still Destiny, and if you didn't truly enjoy it, this probably won't change your mind.

How is this remotely the case? That's like saying Halo 2 is "the same old stuff" as Halo 1. We have boatloads of new content... but more importantly, the new content is substantially better than the old content. Bungie has learned valuable lessons and applied them across the board. Storytelling, mission design, weapon design, enemy behavior... it's all better.
To me it is very clearly a sequel, except it fits on top of the original game rather than replacing it.

I completely agree with you, but I will say: if someone didn't like the core shooter gameplay, or the fact that it's an RPG in addition to a shooter, this won't save it for them.

Absolutely. But to your point, if someone didn't like the core gameplay of Halo 1, they probably wouldn't like Halo 2 either. Yet Halo 2 is still clearly a "new game". That is the kind of comparison I was trying to make... TDB and HoW were mostly "more of the same", while TTK feels like a substantial step forward :)

I love the core gameplay, that's why I've stuck around so long. TTK doesn't feel at all like a sequel. It seems like some "new" missions and UI changes more than anything else. You seriously think this is similar to the amount of game as from Halo 2 to Halo 3?

I didn't say that... H2 to H3 was a new generation of hardware. Bigger difference, for sure.
I think the story missions in TTK do not feel at all like the D1 story missions. It's still Destiny combat, so they have that in common, but there are actual set pieces now, story beats and character developments, segments with unique gameplay mechanics that don't repeat anywhere else in the campaign, genuine surprises, etc.
Almost all of the story missions in D1 were "go here, scan this, defend this area while enemies attack". Occasionally they'd throw a boss at you. TTK is on another level. And the new strikes take things a step further. I've only done 2 so far, but they're both fantastic. Interesting and unique mechanics, and more setpiece moments that make each strike feel like its own experience.

So we're on the same page--what are you expecting from a sequel?
To me, TTK felt like an enormous step forward. It felt more like a sequel than an expansion pack.
This is mostly due to the amount of new content (I've played two nights on only one character and haven't come close to completing the content), the new story missions/cutscenese/storylines blowing the old story out of the water.
I completely disagree with your critique of re-use of assets. Dreadnought is enormous and new. Going back through old spaces was used lightly enough and in novel ways to still feel fresh. I particularly liked going through the Crota raidspace solo.
I know a lot of people didn't like D1, and I have probably sounded like a Bungie apologist in the past--but wow. To me, these new cutscenes and story missions were jaw dropping. In my own dense way, playing through TTK made a light bulb go off in my head--I finally understood the disconnect between what people wanted out of Destiny and what it actually was. TTK made me excited about the present of Destiny and gave me "hope for the future."

TDB and HoW were clearly "expansions" to me because they added new content that fit very much within the mold of the game, and added some tweaks and improvements to a few things here and there. I wouldn't say they were transformative... they just gave us more to do and fixed a few little things along the way.
TTK feels fundamentally different to me (within the same basic FPS mechanics, obviously).
Totally agreed

You all have played it far more than me (I'm only ~3 hours in). I'm hoping I come around to your side of the fence.
PS You really don't think it's strange that the cryptarch is giving out old exotics? It just seems to go against how the other expansions worked. I mean, about 5 seconds later I got a 243 rocket launcher from an engram I got from a package... so it's not like he's withholding the good stuff til later.

That, and just as a nice thing. They don't want to give you a brand new exotic 30 seconds into the new content, I understand that. But it's a nice thank you for buying and a good chance to help complete a Year One Collection. I got MIDA, which I didn't have. Everyone I've talked to received something they didn't already have, unless they had everything already. And for Xbox users, that means if you had all exotics, you were guaranteed a Hawkmoon.

I imagine it was for a lot of people that were missing one or two exotics from Year 1, kind of a way to finish off your Year 1 collection. And for those of us that had all of them, you got a PS exotic which now you can get the Year 2 version for Marks. He won't be giving out year 1 exotics from here on out unless you pick up a Year 1 engram from Xur.

I think I will be picking it up at some point though, you all have persuaded me that it's at least worth a look.
