The EXTREMELY Silent Protagonist *mild spoilers* (Destiny)

by CruelLEGACEY @, Toronto, Thursday, September 17, 2015, 18:00 (3452 days ago)

Just a little thing I noticed...

In all the hubbub about the new Ghost voice, I haven't heard anyone talk about the other voice missing from TTK: our guardian's voice.

Our guardian does not speak once in the entire expansion. Any time Cade or Zavala asks addresses us or asks us a question, Ghost answers.

I'm not sure how I feel about this one way or the other. On the one hand, I wasn't a fan of the voice acting for our characters in D1. I still cringe a little bit every time I hear them speak. So a lack of that doesn't bother me. On the flip side, it does seem a bit strange that our character doesn't have a single line anywhere in the expansion.

Maybe it isn't a bad thing at all? Maybe the fact that nobody is talking about it is a sign that it isn't something that needs to be in the game? What do you all think?

It does bother me a little bit. Some of the exchanges seem awkward with us not responding. It's not enough that I think it ruins any scene, but I think even just an occasional response would add a lot to some of the cutscenes.

I found "my" voice to be jarring in the original destiny. I didn't like it very much and certainly haven't missed it.

I didn't actively notice that in the playthrough.

I did not like that the guardians talked in D1. For me, it's like the faceless-ness of Master Chief: a voiceless guardian is more of a blank slate to project your own desires/character onto.

In D1, the guardian talked so rarely that I didn't understand why s/he spoke at all.

I've always been a fan of the silent protagonist.

Was in the cutscene where we fly Eris’ ship into the Dreadnaught. Unlike others, I actually really liked the voice of my Warlock (human female), so it bugged me that she was silent the whole time. :-\

But the Chief talked...

I don't feel too strongly about this one way or the other, but it is a little jarring that the Guardians talk in D1 cutscenes and not in TTK cutscenes. Some consistency there would be nice.

Yeah. I was comparing his facelessness to voicelessness.

While different, they both serve as a blank attribute the player can project upon.

Have we already forgotten about Rookie?

I prefer a silent protagonist (fine witth them having a face) because the character motivation won't conflict with my imprint of the character.

I'll be completely honest and say that I actually didn't really notice until this thread.

Now that I think about it, though, it is slightly disappointing. I don't actually care either way, but it just thinking about it, it seems odd that your Guardian would never reply to Cayde and let Ghost do all the talking. It does work in the moment, so there's no complaints from me.

I actually like the female Guardian's voice, though (never had a male Guardian, so I don't even know what he sounds like). Seems like there could have been some great opportunities for some witty banter or something, a little character building, but it seems like most people prefer the blank slate approach to their Guardians.

Me, too.

The idea that audiences identify more strongly with a silent protagonist because they can fill in any voice they like... is nonsense.

Of course it is. But when you don't have a silent protagonist, you run into him saying things that you wouldn't, pulling you out of the narrative to some extent. Like when your Guardian fails to ask any questions at the beginning of Destiny. It totally brought me out of the moment. Like what, that non explanation was enough to get you to want to pick up a gun and go to work?

This was my only real complaint. I remember some pre-release material saying your Guardian spoke more, and I kept waiting for it to come, but it never did. I especially was hoping for something when we were piloting Eris' ship. She looked all excited like she wanted to say something :(

Perhaps for you... I absolutely hate it when the main character in a video game has lines.

Silent protagonist ftw

Edit:
UNLESS -
The main character is fully developed a la Nathan Drake, Solid Snake, etc.

If you're going to have a poorly developed character say one or two lines over the duration of the entire game, might as well have left him silent.

I agree with you on full character development. Our guardian was pretty bland. Give the ghost lines or give us a personality, IMO. I love the new Tomb Raider and I identify with Lara because she has something of a personality. I identify with my dudes in Destiny...not that much. I don't identify with Gordon Freeman, either. So I don't think silent protags do it for me either.
