The only exotic engrams I've received have been helmets. Not one weapon, I have 3 skull forts, 2 saint 14s, 2 empyrean bellicose... Wtf

That only applies to game rewards. Engrams are 100% random. Even more so when they only drop non-quest Year 2 gear and weapons, which is a fairly small pool, and some have higher drop rates than others (Tiësto seems to have the highers drop rate for Specials, for example; Sammy's had five drops of that one to be used as Infusion fodder. On the flipside, almost nobody has been able to snag a Jade Rabbit).
Game rewards are less likely to be the same stuff, though.

Of turning into the Jade Rabbit. Makes sense, but so far, I'm 4 out of 4 with gear instead...

It's an interesting gun. My major complaint is that the sight is too narrow. That being said, if you manage it correctly (body body head) you get basically infinite ammo. Because it's really hard to keep track of what's left in the mag, and because it has the Spray and Play perk, I just keep firing until I'm empty and don't use the reload button at all. It's a sort of very subtle but very powerful unique effect. I haven't quite finished the quest for my Boolean Gemini yet, so I can't compare to that, but I'll report back once I have it.

I've got one friend who's gotten all new awesome stuff with every drop, and I have only gotten repeats of 1.0 exotics.
Worse, I've gotten several legendary chest, cloak and helmet drops, but zero arms or legs.
Of course the raid has only given me mouldering shards for the first half too, while everyone else got shiny weapons....
