Jolly Holly Quest - How are you faring? (Destiny)

by Kahzgul, Monday, September 21, 2015, 17:40 (3448 days ago)

I'm curious what strategies people are using to complete the Jolly Holly quest, step 1: Earn 100% faction approval from Tex Mechana by playing Crucible with The Last Word equipped.

I'm currently sitting at 71% after several efforts which got me up to 30% and then back down to 0% a game or two later. The way I'm playing is that I'm adding artificial difficulty to my play by equipping TLW for the whole game, regardless of outcome. It's making me a better player, to be sure, but it sucks to win a game with a 2.5 K/D ratio and only net a 2% gain to my overall quest progress. My biggest successes have come during games of Rift where I've gained as much as 25% in a single game, but I've also had my biggest losses in Rift as well - it all depends on how coordinated the other team is.

One of my buddies did it by playing as per normal without TLW, and then changing to TLW once he got heavy ammo and/or super so that he could reap the rewards from multi-kills and streaks without risking percentage during deaths. Also, apparently you get a 3% boost for each win, so if his team was close to winning he's swap in the gun and hide in a corner. It all feels cheese as heck to me, but he at least finished it in about half the time that it has taken me so far.

So... How is DBO doing with this? I'm actually pleased to see a quest with such a challenging barrier to entry (step 1: Get TLW, step 2: Be awesome).

Did it in about an hour. I never switched out last word. Only hip fire, never ads. Get heavy ammo, hang back, then when the rockets stop flying clean up with an HMG. The key is to get medals, as those add bonus points. Things like Master Blaster, Machine Lord, and Buckshot bruiser are easy to get and boost your score, but killstreak medals are the way to go. A 15 kill streak medal took me up something like 40%.

It took me 11 straight games with an average k/d of 2.53.

by Funkmon @, Monday, September 21, 2015, 18:09 (3448 days ago) @ Kahzgul

I am not good at heavy ammo like Cody (I die pretty quick when it comes around), or streaks. I didn't get that many.

In short, I played objective and ran around in hallways with a Felwinter's Lie. It was much easier for me. I barely even shot TLW.

It was worse then thorn..

I ended up cheating, switching off TLW at start and only going back on when situations were in my favor. This is after several games where I would get up to 6-10% and then blow it all the next game.

I was in one rumble match where a guy went 22-0. He was obviously a hardcore PVP'er since he had the good Fellhammer, Adept Messenger and the Deer helmet. I just couldn't seem to touch him, at best I would get within one shot of the kill, and he always seemed to find me just as I got a two kill streak going. Then I had a mach where three guys where boosting to get it, and made a nuisance of myself so they spent the whole match hunting me down.

I generally hover around the 1-2 K/D zone, so this is a hard bounty for me to begin with, and I feel a bit awful for having to play the mechanics rather then the game.

Hate this quest. Being on a losing team makes it worse. I had a match where I had almost a 2.0 k/d last night, led the team, but lost 16% progress cause we lost.

I've resorted to unequipping TLW the second I know the match is going south.

I should add, I've been at it for 3 days now, and I consider myself a decent PvP player. I've had a positive K/D over that time, but it's not enough.

When I did it, I didn't go negative for losing as long as I had a good K/D. Maybe you aren't getting enough medals/multikills?

I was going to say, I don't think wins or losses play in to the quest at all... Just personal performance.

It must be badges, because BlackTiger was playing with me last night and I was checking my progress with each match. This is the game I went from 85% completion to 69% completion: game here As you can see, I got a few badges while playing that one, including a Machine Lord.

I don't get this first part of the quest, none of what you guys are talking about has been my experience of it. I never had a problem with the Thorn bounty. Finished it multiple times and don't remember it being too difficult in the Crucible portion. I don't even mind using TLW. I don't even feel like my playing is worse, I feel like there has been no pattern to whether the percentage goes up or down.

Here are the games where I increased my reputation for the bounty. Basically all my games from the 19th except for the one on exodus blue. I unequipped TLW since I had no idea what to do on that map.

https://www.bungie.net/en/Legend/PGCR?instanceId=3573546442&characterId=2305843009215257600

https://www.bungie.net/en/Legend/PGCR?instanceId=3572866035&characterId=2305843009215257600 (Biggest gain on this one)

https://www.bungie.net/en/Legend/PGCR?instanceId=3572880481&characterId=2305843009215257600

Looks like I won all but one of those games.

I'm trying to do this with what is probably my worst PvP class, my Hunter. I don't seem to live through much no matter how cautious or how often I run away. My Titan on the other hand, is a beast.

Sad thing is, my hunter is by far my most favorite character to play the game with, my Titan the least, and yet my Titan is by far my best PvP class. Gah.

I’m generally bad with TLW

by Beorn @, <End of Failed Timeline>, Monday, September 21, 2015, 23:51 (3447 days ago) @ BeardFade

Finally got the Jolly Holliday quest complete today, but it required a change in my normal play with TLW. As others have said, The Last Word is not intended to be used with its scope (especially with the 2.0 update); it’s all about firing from the hip and tracking your target. This game was critical, though, I got nearly 70% completion from it because of the two Storm Bringer medals (three kills in one Stormtrance super) back-to-back and the great K/D. Add an additional 3% for the win, too! :)

As I’ve said previously on the podcast and elsewhere, I haven’t had too much success with The Last Word in the past year, but by the end of this bounty I was actually sort of liking the gun. Once I had it figured out, things seemed to go a lot more smoothly.

With a whole lot of camptastic playing, and not equipping it on maps I knew I couldn't camp easily (and one quit when the Classic 6v6 served up Combined Arms on First Light), I was able to complete this first step.

I'm curious what strategies people are using to complete the Jolly Holly quest, step 1: Earn 100% faction approval from Tex Mechana by playing Crucible with The Last Word equipped.

My strategies are as follows:
- Use heavies for kills.
- Pick a subclass with a super that allows for easy multikills. (Sunsinger for me)
- Let your teammates take the lead.
- Don't get close unless you are going to die.
- Keep an escape route nearby. If you are getting surrounded / overwhelmed, just run!
- If the map is a bad one for you (or if the game is going poorly) unequip TLW.
- Play control and forget about controlling the zones, just focus on kills.

It took me about 4 games or so to complete. A few more if you count the 1 or 2 matches where I unequipped TLW because I didn't know the map. I kept TLW equipped the entire game.

It's making me a better player, to be sure, but it sucks to win a game with a 2.5 K/D ratio and only net a 2% gain to my overall quest progress.

!? How does that even happen. The games where I got over 2 K/D I earned at least 15%. I had 1 game where I managed a 3.5 K/D and I think I went up 30+%.

FYI, then next step requires a crap-ton of glimmer. The step after that is easy, just get shotgun kills in the crucible - I don't think you can backwards on that step. The final step includes a 290 light level Shield Brothers strike with the requirement that you shotgun the Shield Brothers to kill them! I haven't even attempted that one yet since I'm only like 270 light currently and I think you really want 3 people for the attempt.

Took three games: Control, Clash, Rift... *Vid*

I'm no MLG strategist, and my main strategy consists of See enemy>Run towards enemy>Shoot, but I remember those three games pretty well, and I am probably the absolute worst person at using TLW (multiple witnesses can attest to this), so who knows, maybe my advice will help someone:

1. The Drifter (Control) 25-10
I've only played it this one time, but I love it. The trick here was to hold C and B, and float between B, A, and the circular center with either Last Word or shotgun (you can see enemies on your radar long before you're in their sightline. I imagine that those good with TLW will fare better in this area than I did, because I exclusively ran the shotgun/melee/grenade/Super combo.

2. Sector 618 (Clash) 23-5
A bit more familiar with this map. I stayed near the Rift Spawn, avoiding the left platform (longer sightlines). You have access to two ammo boxes on that bridge, and enemies tend to give you plenty of leg room to hit them if you jump over the crates. It's great for TLW I'm sure, because of narrow sightlines that favor shorter range encounters. Again, ran the same non-TLW combo.

3. Memento (Rift) 21-2

I actually have a video of this one!

Focused mainly on hitting the enemy from the side. Rift is a great gametype to focus on for this Bounty, because enemies all tend to face the objective, and it's real easy to get behind/beside them and push through from there. I ran the same combo, but actually fired The Last Word for the first and only time during the entire bounty (as you can see by my terrible aim with it after the one kill, there's a good reason for that)! :P

Holy crap I suck with that gun. Currently sitting at a very long and painful 38%. I was playing skirmish with Raga and Red and we did ok for the most part except for one match were we just got smoked. Hoping I can finish this quest up and never have to use TLW again. Congrats to those who are good with this gun

Don't forget you can use your secondary weapons instead of TLW. Also, as Cody has said elsewhere, don't use the sights on TLW.

tried both of those and still sucked. I usually prefer to snipe and play at range. whenever people get up in my face I can't seem to stop them with TLW.

I've always been terrible with TLW, until Cyber have me some remarkably simple advice: think of it like an Auto Rifle. I'd been having a tough time because is been trying to use it like every other hand cannon. But as soon as I made the mental switch to "AR Mode", I finished this step of the quest in 4 or 5 games.

Do you start with body shots and let it kick to the head?

I'm always ADS when firing anything but a shotgun. so that's probably part of my problem.

I don't even try for the headshots - so I guess? TLW is all about just putting several rounds onto the target quickly. I don't remember for sure, but without headshots you get a kill in something like ~5 bullets. So you can just hold down the trigger and get the kills quite quickly. Once you get good with the gun and can manage the kick, then start trying to aim for the head to speed up the kills but don't bother when you aren't very good with it yet.

the range is pretty short with it now, too. So you have to be aware of that.

I got to 91% normally, but then fell back to 78% after a pair of disastrous Rift games. So I cheesed it. I only equipped TLW when I had either a super or heavy ammo, and unequipped it as soon as those were gone (unless I was on the cusp of merciless). I'm semi-ashamed, and semi-really, really glad I was able to do it. This was by far and away the most challenging task I've been given in Destiny.
