Three of Coins nerf: Bad Implementation IMO (Destiny)
by Kahzgul, Friday, September 25, 2015, 16:43 (3444 days ago)
There's a really easy way to have fixed the Three of Coins farming that people were doing: Put a cooldown timer on using the item.
But instead, Bungie has added an invisible, unknown timer which nerfs the effect if it's used "too rapidly." We have no clue as to how rapid "too rapid" is.
Before the nerf, one could expect around a 1:6 engram to coins used ratio. Post nerf, people on reddit are reporting closer to 1:15, and that's chaining entire strikes rather than farming a single boss and wiping over and over.
Clarity on this time would be much appreciated, but putting a lockout timer on the item would have been dramatically more effective on all fronts.

The fix seems to be working as intended

The whole point is to mitigate the effectiveness of farming. You can blast through some Strikes pretty damn fast, so that’s not necessarily a good measure.
I had used two Three of Coins before yesterday’s patch and I used two Three of Coins this morning while in the Court of Oryx (Level 3). I netted an exotic chest piece on the second coin. We’ll see how many more before my next one, but the math is holding steady for now.

I don't argue that farming needed mitigation, I'm arguing that the implementation of this fix could have been better. More transparent, more clear, less likely to cause people to waste coins.

I appreciate the way they fixed it. This way I can check that I have one before a boss battle, if I don't I can pop it before the boss goes down and then immediately thereafter pop a new one (while it's on my mind) so I'll be ready for the next boss I hit.
I do agree that the invisibility of it is a problem. Initially I wondered why they didn't just implement a cool down. However, I have come to really prefer the way they implemented it, it's ideal for me.

That's the thing of it, though.
Don't want to risk wasting coins? Use them less often.
That means you dip into the gamble less often (you may usually forget about the coins), which means you get free rewards less often.
The odds may be the same, but the rate at which to play them is greatly reduced. Otherwise, folks would just run Draxis, slap a countdown timer on, then as soon as it buzzed, they'd drop out of whatever activity, and run it again. You decrease the rate, but don't really fix anything.
The ambiguity has a few benefits for Bungie slowing the rate at which folks get exotics, while still giving them the chance at rewards for running stuff like Nightfalls multiple times...

Log in, use coin, go kill Draxis and myself. Leave, go to tower, get bounties, turn in any engrams, daily housekeeping etc.. Back to orbit, okay, kill Draxis again... Back to orbit... Hrm, need to patrol mars... Finish bounties... kill Draxis again... etc.
Draxis has become the new mile marker on my road to light level 310.

This is one of those "Doctor, it hurts when I do this" moments, isn't it? (See also: Loot Cave, Crota network cable pulling, rushing past the fun to blind raid.)

Certainly could be. I do find it... interesting, mechanically speaking. If it ever feels grindy rest assured I'll stop doing it (see: my 2 month vacation from the game during HoW). Draksis himself is such a simple arrangement for doing this that I'm more likely to be annoyed by the load times than I am to find killing him for sweet loots to be grindy. As for my play, I tend to jump activities pretty often, so I don't think punctuating them with potential exotic lewts is going to negatively impact my experience.

And if you want to do that, that's your provolone. It's fine, but just be aware that if you do these things too quickly, your odds at a free weapon/armor decrease slightly.
It's all about what you want to get out of the game; rewards for helping others run Nightfall? Sweet.
A schedule for optimized odds of a drop? Also fine.
The issue was people getting loads of rewards for not really doing anything.
On the flipside, those that struggled to get a 310 Black Spindle are rewarded with the ability to get all of their Specials to 300 for a couple of weeks, so Bungie both clubs and totally nails reward systems...

It's my... cheese? Do you mean prerogative? I guess if you're saying I'm cheesing it, you'd be right, so either way. Just a new turn of phrase for me, I suppose.

And it's a totally understandable issue. Now the issue is that people who are clearing entire strikes back to back to back are seeing crappy returns from the 3 of coins and aren't sure if it's because of bad luck or this nerf, and the reason they aren't sure is that Bungie refuses to post a timer, and implemented the nerf without putting a cooldown timer on the actual coin, which would have solved the issue completely.

I think the heroic challenge and related rewards are awesome!

Eh - that's just Korny being Korny.
A little while ago, someone over on HBO wrote "if you want to do X, that's your provocative" - the mistake struck a number of people as funny enough to riff off of.
Basically, he's still making fun of that guy. I like the cheese interpretation, though - that's a nice touch. :)

You can even get ANY loot from certain bosses anymore. Unless that's intentional, the fix is certainly not working as intended.

Correction:
You can't get SOME loot from a SINGLE boss. Strike streak bonuses still work as well as Three of Coins.

If I may ask: what loot from which boss? I haven't heard about this before.

Value doesn't drop the regular engrams after the hot fix, so if for example if you played him first in a strike playlist.

Gotcha. Thanks!

They also don't use up the exotic particles buff that you get from using a three of coins.

Psion Flayers as well.

Yeah, I noticed that too, before the hot fix dropped.

I recall some rumblings that if you log out before getting your drop, the increased-chance-on-next-drop is reset to zero.
Can anyone confirm or deny this?

I can confirm that you lose the buff on log out. Can't say if it resets to zero or not because there's no means within the game to see if the multiplier is active (or even exists, beyond the text which basically says "trust me, this is real").
