Interesting changes coming to Trials of Osiris

Sounds like they're aiming to make it even more difficult to make it to the Lighthouse. Wonder how that will shake out.

Can you elaborate? I don't have an hour to listen to a podcast.

Luke didn't get specific, but he did say he wants that trip to the Lighthouse to be more prestigious. He said they're looking at tweaks to matchmaking so teams get matched up against other teams who are performing similarly well (in terms of win/loss... he specifically said "skill based matchmaking wouldn't work for trials").

So the more you win, the harder it gets.

That's what I got from it. He referenced Harthstone as an example of things they are looking at, but I've never played it so I don't know what that exactly means.

*sigh* Wonderful

The problem with making rewards more "prestgious" and elite is that it alienates a larger portion of your audience. Trials (and the attitude it seems to always bring with it) is the thing that almost made me quit Destiny, and I'm good at it. Lord knows how it makes people who aren't as good feel.

I don't really understand who benefits, if I'm honest. Except the type of person who likes to brag, I guess.

Phhh. Sound like SOMEBODY didn't make it to the lighthouse 10+ times. Why should we listen to you, causal? Go back and use that Gjallarhorn you got from Xur to do Crota.

I quit after I got all the guns, and I don't think I'm even going to start on this expansion.

Were it so easy

As challenging as it can be to make it to the lighthouse, I thought year 1 Trials hit a pretty good sweet spot:

Most players wouldn't be able to get to the lighthouse week after week, it was at least within reach of most. You didn't need to be a great PvP player, as long as you put the time in to learn how to work well within a team, you stood a chance of making it at least once.

On the other hand, I wonder if Trials' appeal is niche enough that it's mostly the same small group of veterans going in every single week. For the competitive crowd, I can see the appeal of raising the stakes a bit. Bungie just needs to make sure they keep the balance between difficulty and the rewards.

Okay, Luke is awesome. Great interview. So many times when I hear interviews with developers they sound like politicians or aggressive pitchmen. Even when Luke uses euphemistic phrases like "opportunities to improve" it doesn't come across as weaselly to me.

It's evident that Luke is a Destiny fan, and not just a Destiny developer. One of the things that has always seemed to set Bungie apart is that they really like their own games and play them. That seems truer now than ever.
