So, I'm working on the "Reforging the Sword" quest, and there's a step called "essentials". You need to collect 10 of a rare shard that can be found inside planetary materials while on patrol. The material I was tasked with finding hides inside Relic Iron, so I went to Mars. "I only need 10..." I thought to myself. "...How long could this possibly take?"
I'll give you an idea. When I landed on Mars, I had 13 relic iron in my inventory. By the time I found my 10th shard, I had 230 relic iron. I went from having 4000 glimmer to maxing out my wallet, simply due to all the chests I opened. It took 2.5 hours. 150 minutes of going back and forth between patrol zones, picking up relic iron.
Now, I could have gone a bit faster if I was doing nothing but searching for relic iron, but collecting these shards is only 1/2 of the quest item. You are also tasked with getting an insane number of ability kills (void, I'm my case). As a nightstalker, the only ability kills that count are my primary grenade, or killing an enemy with a direct hit from my bow. After 90 minutes of splitting my time between ability kills and finding shards, I was only at 20% of the required void kills, and 3/10 on the shards, so I have up on the kills and focused on the shards.
Bungie, I love you. And I love Taken King. But this... This is not a good quest. The is the absolute worst kind of MMO grind. Just throwing my 2 cents out there: I hope we never see a quest like this in Destiny ever again.
<3
ps
I'll take every word of this back if I've missed something obvious or simple that speeds up the process. I'll even eat a sock ;)

I was trying that, didn't seem to be doing anything. But I'll give it another shot.
I'm not too concerned about that portion of the quest... I'll complete it eventually just by playing. It does seem to take an insanely long time, though :-/

Yeah that whole section of the quest isn't hard, it's just tedious. The same idea would have been kind of cool and novel if you only had to get 1-3 of the rare materials and 100-200 ability kills. The numbers they chose are really ridiculous.

Is that people will treat them as their main quest.
I remember one of Cody's recent Whine-of-the-day posts that complained about the Dreadnaught shards., saying that such a quest had no place in Destiny. But here's the thing, they do have a place. Quests can't all be "pick this and be done in 20 minutes for sweet loot".
Some are about delayed gratification. Have that quest? Don't track it. Forget about it. Leave it in the background and focus on quests that you want to do, and be surprised when you get a notification that you've made progress, or check on it down the road and be pleasantly surprised at the progress you've made.
I got the "25 shard" Eris quest, and when I got around to checking my progress, I was already way past 25, so I just waddled on over to Eris and turned them in. Don't do anything in the game that you don't want to do, is what I'm saying (although that exotic sword is pretty sweet).

I definitely agree, the rare materials are really the main thing though that I feel was a little much, mainly because you have to do it in a specific location.

That's all well and good if the quests involve activities that we are doing anyway. But when was the last time you went out of your way to find Relic Iron? Last night aside, I don't think I've picked up 10 of the things since House of Wolves launched. So if I ever wanted to complete this quest, I have to go out of my way to make it happen. Nothing was forcing me to do it all in 1 sitting, but I dislike quests like this so much that I just wanted to get it out of the way. If I only put in 10 or 15 minutes at a time, it'd be weeks or even months before I completed it.
Is there a chance that when you get the bonus relic iron from engram drops that you'll get the new material? If so, you can probably complete this quest via the strike playlist, as an aside. As long as getting relic iron gives you a chance to get the new material.
If it's only via chests then I'm surprised bungie requires chest farming that's so intense for that.

Far as I can tell, it only drops when you harvest crops of Relic Iron. I don't think I got any from chests, nor can you get it from the iron that drops on bounty completion. Even if it did, you'd need to complete hundreds of bounties given the low drop rate.
I'm thinking of the ability that some ghost shells have that give you relic iron when you get an engram. No idea if that would spawn it or not either though. If it does, that makes sense to me. If it doesn't, then it sounds like a huge grind that there's no way to get around.

My mistake. That's a good thought, but my gut is telling me it probably wouldn't work (since relic iron from chests doesn't work either). Probably worth testing, though!

... so? What's the problem with the game having some long-term goals, even if it means some players never do them?

No.
A quest is supposed to be an adventure in and of itself. We play video games for fun tasks and challenges. If you want delayed gratification, then delay the steps like with Jolly Holliday.
Everything you ask your players to do should be fun. Period. I'm still on the 'get 50 hadium flakes' portion of the quest Cruel is talking about, but am delaying it because it's so damn lame.
Your suggestion is also lame, since if you can do a quest without even trying to do it then what kind of quest is that?! I guess I'll just incidentally slay that dragon and save the princess while I'm doing some other thing.

Semantics.

From what I can see, your major problem with Destiny is rapidly becoming semantics. You don't like the way they use the words "legend" and now "quest".

It has nothing to do with that. If they give you an activity to do, and that activity is not for its own sake fun, and the suggestion is to just complete that activity incidentally while doing other things, that means:
1. The task is not challenging
2. The task is not interesting
If you can do it while doing other things, not thinking about it, how cool could it possibly be? I'm shocked there's opposition to my viewpoint, which is to make everything you do in the game as interesting as possible.

For the materials, the items your looking for only drop from the resources. So in your case, the relic iron ore blocks jutting out of the sand.
For that reason, I suggest getting a ghost shell that highlights the resources your looking for. Just hop in a sparrow and start roaming an area. If you can find a resource node close to a transition point between areas, you can go back and forth and reopen the same node. Field Scout is nice, but it doesnt have the range or the on-screen immediacy of a shell.
With a proper shell, I got mine done in a couple hours.
As for kills with Nightstalker? I'd suggest the Hellmouth. Lots of low level mobs that like to stick fairly close. You can probably nail more than a few with a grenade or toxic smoker. Ideally, I'd have a Defender or Sunsinger buddy to just poop out orbs of light for you.
Defenders and Nightstalkers definitely are the tougher void classes to do this with. If anyone else is reading this, I'd recommend void for warlocks, solar for titans and arc for hunters. Sunbreakers and Bladedancers are the most power offensive of their class, so they have a leg up in that way.

Yep, that's exactly what I did. I wasn't sure if the shards would drop from chests as well, so I just grabbed them as I saw them.

About the same for me.

Striker: Grenade, Storm Fist, Fist of Havoc = 3
Sunbreaker: Grenade, Sunstrike, Hammer of Sol = 3
Gunslinger: Grenade, Incendiary Blade, Golden Gun = 3
Bladedancer: Grenade, Blink Strike, Arc Blade = 3
Nightstalker: Grenade, Smoke, Shadowshot = 3
Voidwalker: Grenade, Energy Drain, Nova Bomb = 3
Sunsinger: Genade, Scorch, Radiance* = 3
Stormcaller: Grenade, Thunderstrike, Stormtrance = 3
Defender: Grenade, Disintegrate, Ward of Dawn = 2
Defenders will always be at a disadvantage for task that require ability kills, elemental kills or Super kills because, unlike every other subclass, their Super does no damage. At all. Even Raidance, which doesn't do much on its own, generates Orbs of Light for kills and counts for Super kills... But, Armor of Light? Blessing of Light? Heck, even Weapons of Light? A big fat nope.
Basically, don't start the Void Edge's Exotic Sword quest on a Titan since it'll take you about a third longer to get those 1000 elemental ability kills that it would with any other class.

A Ghost that marks the Relic shards sped it up a decent amount. If you use a sniper scope it adds that range for the markers. I don't think chests give the rare materials.
Void kills as a Titan are even worse. I've maxed out melee and grenade recharge but it's still taking forever. At least you can farm kills anywhere. I've been hanging out in Skywatch. Getting a spawn cave during a high spawn period with a Pillar grenade is great, but rare.

No chests, MP kills count for more. And the last step...
by kornman00, Sunday, September 27, 2015, 00:53 (3442 days ago) @ CruelLEGACEY
In my experience chests don't ever drop the material, only raw planet material that you mine. Also, getting ability kills in MP counts MUCH more than PvE (which is 500).
And while the last mission will have matchmaking enabled, if your fire team has different swords then it's just THAT much harder. Thankfully my match made team only had two of the three sword types.

You CAN get the rare material from chests.
