That's what I was doing, with one minor variation. As a Nightstalker, I saved up my super, triggered the boss fight, and then wailed on him with super and rockets before retreating to the alcove. But since he doesn't move much, maybe the better route is to save the super for adds and just retreat to the alcove immediately.

If that doesn't work, FTB it is.

I did it as a nightstalker as well, using the same method you described. Except I used a machine gun instead of rockets, because I he moves a bit and I didn't have anything with tracking at the time.

Cheapley's suggestion of using a sniper is a good idea too. You'll just want to make sure you finish him off quickly, because without a shotgun you'll be vulnerable to the adds creeping your way.
