My thoughts on my Second Kings Fall Run *SP* (Destiny)

For a change of pace, and loss of sleep, I decided to do a Raid in the middle of the week last night. Myself, Cody, CruelLEGACEY, Dogcowmoof, Slycrel, and Kings fall virgin Vortech infiltrated the Dreadnaught to defeat Oryx. Although we didn't defear oyrx, I had a great time. My thoughts are as follows:

1. Knowing the mechanics allows you to enjoy the Raid. - During my blind raid, we had alot of fun, but I felt like I missed quite a bit by worrying about figuring out the raid. I was able to look around and notice new things. Everyone was able to spend less time trying to justify their reasoning for wanting to try new mechanics, and was able to crack up and joke. Made for a much better atmosphere. I recall someone calling me out for my constant sighs during out first Oryx run. I was just worn out. This time I felt like I was in a much better mood, and want to apologize for my first run throughs poor attitude. It was my fault for investing that much time.

2. You are able to try new methods - We were able to try new methods during the boss fights. The first we tried was instead of having 2 aggro grabbers during the Golgoroth fight, we tried it with just one. This allowed us to have 5 people hitting him. After the Gaze timer went out, we would all hop out, kill adds, get ammo, repeat. It was easy to follow, but we did get the "about to enrage" message. The benefits to this one were pretty straight forward. More people to work on Golgoroth. Less moving parts. Also the ability to get ammo between rotations helps with the DPS. We tried a few failed things on the Deathsingers, but the knowledge gained was good.

3. You can get the Fragments and chests - Now that everyone knows where they are, I was able to look up an easy guide, along with everyone's help, to get all of the fragments from the raid. The chests were easily acquirable as well.

4. You get to lure First Timers into the Piston Trap - We got Vortech to stand where the orb was at the start of the Piston Jump Puzzle. Twas' a good time.

Hopefully we can finish this run tonight!

I feel the same way as you. I did one yesterday where I stopped caring and it was much more fun. But, we never got the single gaze technique worked out. Pretty easy, is it?

Easy yes, but general consensus was that the alternating Gaze was Faster.. Our first time through we alternated, and he didnt enrage. This time he did. I ran him earlier this week with an LFG group and they introduced me to this method. We managed to get him down faster at that time than last night. The 1 aggro puller process is alot simpler.

I ran the raid last night going the single gaze holder method. I personally prefer the two-gaze holder method as it seems faster and allows you to do so much more damage. Plus in the back of my mind I feel that the two gaze method will be how we have to do it on hard mode.

But once you know the mechanics then the raid does become more about having fun while doing it. Learning the mechanics blind was fun in it's own way, but eventually you just get so worn out by it.

I'm glad I did King's Fall blind... it was my first blind raid, and there isn't another experience in Destiny quite like it. But I personally don't fall into the "first blind raid is the best raid" camp. I enjoyed it, but the fun was tempered by how exhausting it was. I have way more fun in the subsequent raids, when everyone understands the encounters and can have fun experimenting and improvising a little.

Blind was a good experience, but...

Yup. Blind was a good experience, but... I wouldn't want to raid more than maybe once every couple months if that was every raid was like.

I will say this. Having only 1 designated aggro puller did make it a little tricky to pull aggro if the Ogre happened to be looking in his direction.

Some back-of-the-envelope-equations will tell us that 4 down in the pit for longer should do more Damage Per Minute. I say per minute because 5 will crank out more per second, but it isn't sustained like 4 is.

Two Gazer Method:
Damage per cycle: 480,000 dmg = 4 guardians * 1000 DPS * 6 globes * 20 second gaze duration
Cycle period: 195 sec = 75 seconds to kill adds + 20 second gaze * 6 globes
Average DPS: 2462 dps
Pro: Higher overall dps
Con: more mechanically complex

One Gazer Method:
Damage per cycle: 100,000 dmg = 5 guardians * 1000 DPS * 1 globe * 20 second gaze duration
Cycle period: 95 sec = 75 seconds to kill adds + 20 second gaze * 1 globe
Average DPS: 1052 dps
Pro: "easier"
Con: takes around twice as long.

I got the 75 seconds to kill adds by quickly checking a youtube video doing the 1 globe method. The 1000 DPS figure was pulled out of the shaft, and doesn't matter because it would cancel out between the two equations.

Edit: Changed the title to be less spoilerish.

We did it a third way which was smooth like butter. I guess call it the 1.5 gaze pullers method? You only pop two bubbles per phase.

Kill adds as per normal. Both gaze pullers stand on the box just left of where you enter the room. Pop the first bubble (front left). First gaze puller shoots golg in the back (easy to do from the added height of the box, even if golg is facing you) and then moves to the right so balls have a clear path to him, second puller starts shooting down 2nd bubble. Everyone else jumps down into the pit. Weapons of light between bubble 1 and where bubble 2 will drop. DPS goes nuts with snipers in Golg's belly. As gaze ends, second puller snipes Golg's back to pull gaze and then jumps to the left of the box to give balls a clear path. Gaze puller 1 jumps into the pit to help DPS. People in pit drop 2nd bubble, run through weapons of light to get to the pool, and go crazy with dps again. When this ends, everyone jumps out of the pool for phase reset. Kill adds, repeat.

It took us 2 cycles to get Golg down low enough for taken to show up. Everyone jumps out, clear as many taken as you can, do it again for the win. Very easy, very fast.

Regarding #1, yeah, we played through the Webpriest last night and it had a completely different vibe, and was a lot of fun. Probably 98% less frustration.

It's to be expected, and it will be different from here on out than it was the first time, and that's precisely why many of us cherish our first blind run. We can't solve a puzzle twice. Yeah, it can be frustrating (and tiring if you're trying to do it all in one go), but there's a special feeling you get from overcoming the frustration and succeeding. Speaking for myself, it's why playing Destiny raids blind have been among the best gaming experiences I've ever had. I know I'm not alone there.

It's a credit to the raids though that they are so much fun even when you know what to do! I look forward to relaxing with the King's Fall and refining our approaches.
