The First Curse Questline *SP* (Destiny)

I finally hit rank 5 with the Gunsmith on my hunter today. Got the questline for the First Curse, and then had to go to leave work today. After doing my research, it appears that we have several steps.
1. Get handcannon kills with a telemetry active
2. Talk to Banshee.
3. WAIT FOR ARMS DAY
4. Get 7 killing sprees in the crucible and a precision kill spree
5. Talk to Banshee
6. WAIT FOR ARMS DAY
7. Weapon Acquired.
At first I was very upset by this, essentially 2 weeks of waiting! You have got to be kidding.
Then I came up with what I think is the reason they did this. They want to space out release of Exotics, to keep things interesting. If we potentially had access to every exotic questline and could finish them all in a week, most of us would already have them, and then have nothing to look forward too. I am glad they took this approach. The First Curse looks sick, and I cannot wait for October 21st to get here =]

Yeah, certain folks might whine and cry about having to wait or grind for certain rewards, just because they want everything now, now, now, but I really prefer this approach.
Going into Crucible, and not seeing 10,000 Chaperones was a nice change of pace from the days when Xur would have the new hotness, and everyone would be using the same weapon.
Keeps the sandbox alive, and makes your weapons feel a bit more like the accomplishments that Bungie was going for. Every time I equip my Spindle, I remember the struggle, and the fact that most friends still don't have one (and I think of the friends that I did help get one). Wouldn't have that if everyone was rolling with it. I haven't even been close to starting the First Curse, so congrats. You'll have one weeks before I do.

Waiting is fine. Grinding is not.

That's the thing about ROLE-PLAYING games. Sometimes you have to work to find enough resources to build/trade for what you want.
It can't all be shooty-jumpy-high five to rewards all the time.
Yet another thing that you're wrong about, as usual. ;)

And there's a reason that in say Dungeons and Dragons, you do not bother to role play the minutiae of your character's life. It's boring. Best to just do what's actually interesting and fun.
I'm sure you'd love to just run around the Tower's gym for 2 hours every day so you can build your stamina to actually do the stuff your guardian does.

We play very different games of D&D methinks.

Indeed. :)

I don't know about you, but I get my ghost to reconstitute me in prime condition so I don't have to exercise.

Leg day? I'd rather jump off a cliff! *GUARDIAN DOWN*

That's also one of the most common complaints about ROLE-PLAYING games... they often take up your time with "busy work" rather than provide fun, interesting, challenging activities. One of the reasons I love Destiny so much is that it provides some of the character progression of an RPG without requiring boatloads of those meaningless, grindy activities. But there are a couple instances where some of us feel Bungie fell into that old RPG trap. I'm all for little activities, things to do, while I'm out on Patrol, etc. Harvesting 250 pieces of Relic Iron to complete a quest (seriously, that's how many I needed to grab), is not a reasonable or enjoyable activity for me, or most Destiny players.
This isn't a whiny complaint at all. This is the game gating something fun (exotic sword) behind something tedious (farming an excessive amount of planetary materials).
It can't all be shooty-jumpy-high five to rewards all the time.
Why not? Why can't it be? I'd say that The Taken King is 99% exactly that, and its better for it.

While I mostly agree that there should be a little grind, I see what you are saying. I think the problem is they do not want everyone to have everything a month after release then get bored months before the next. This is why they have these "barriers" to keep us from getting everything. The problem with these "barriers" is that they are really boring. Wait a week, get 250 of these, do the hokie pokie and turn yourself around.

The thing is, Bungie has already found many ways to create "barriers" that don't feel like mindless grinds. Some quests don't open up until you've hit the required rep level with one of the vendors, which is totally cool because you can usually gain rep just by playing the game however you like. Things like the arms day orders have built-in waiting periods too, which I think is a great solution. Helps space things out without making the player feel like they need to spend time doing something they don't want to do in order to get the thing they want to use.

I agree, but I think that comes from the Lack of a in game indicator. For instance, the Black Spindle. You have to do the heroic daily, but before that was known, you didnt even have a clue it existed. And even if you dont have it, you don't have a quest staring you in the face that you really cant do much about.
But yes I agree that there are options.

I agree!
Grinding is filler for a lack of actual content, telling the player to do something boring for a while. Waiting is telling the player to do something else (hopefully something fun) for a while. Much better.

One person's grind is another person's stroll in the park. Arguably having to re-kill enemies in patrol missions is a "grind" if looked at from a different perspective, but nobody complains about that. (Do they? =) )
Hadium flakes are a grind if you have to have them all now and can't wait.
If you don't mind getting them over time it's not a big deal.

Having a good approach to grinding doesn't make it less of a grind, it just means you're being smart about your approach to that grind and measuring it out well so you stay happy :)
Hadium Flakes do feel a bit grindy to me, but there's so much else going on in the Dreadnaught that I just don't mind. It's really easy to just go to the court for a few minutes and then get back to flake finding.

You're right, but I also think that getting them over time can mean very different things depending on the player. For players who enjoy spending time in the dreadnought, they'll stumble across Hadium flakes on a regular basis. But for players who rarely or never spend time in the dreadnought, there is no option but to go out of your way to acquire them, which can feel like a grind :)

Yeah, but for so can getting sword kills in the crucible. That feels like a grind to me. But some people that might be enjoyable. Everything can be considered a grind to some people.

The interesting thing about crucible quests is that I think they generally tend to be a bit more contentious than PvE quests. Some people just plain don't enjoy PvP, so any quests that require PvP activities feel like a grind. But even people who love PvP (like myself) run in to problems with some of the crucible quests. I think it's because so much of what happens in a crucible game is out of our own personal control. It's super frustrating when I'm doing everything I can to compete quest requirements, but can't progress because of my opponents, or teammates, or lag, etc.

I fully agree. I'm in the middle of "win 5 elimination matches" and holy crap does that ever depend on my teammates being good.

Not only that, but I feel like whenever I do quests, especially the Chaperone quest, I feel like I'm not actually helping my team. Which in PvP seems super wrong. In PvE it's no big deal. I also don't really like playing PvP when I'm not playing with Buddies. So when I do Quests in PvP I feel like I'm just being a detriment to my team.

That's the biggest problem in my book. When I'm doing a Crucible quest, I absolutely do not give a crap if I win or lose (unless that plays into the quest), so I'm absolutely screwing my team. And it sucks, but I'm not a huge fan of the Crucible, so I don't care and just want to get it done.

Most of the Crucible quests will help your team
by Kahzgul, Wednesday, October 07, 2015, 19:17 (3431 days ago) @ MacAddictXIV
Not all of them, but *most*. The Chaperone, for example, may be encouraging you to hang back and preserve your own life rather than rushing in, but having a high K/D ration is actively denying the enemy team points. You may not be earning massive points for your own team, but denying the enemy is just as valuable.
While many of the Crucible quests may get you out of your comfort zone (use Autorifles, play Salvage, etc), that's not you hurting your team so much as you learning new skills. I'll also add that none of the crucible quests ask you to kill people with a gun that does half the damage of a normal gun, or that paints a giant red arrow over your head when you use it or anything like that. I have, personally, gotten much better at the crucible as a result of having to adapt my play to the new quests' requests.
