theres almost no reason to keep any of it outside of aesthetics, nostalgia, and the tiny fact that it's still useful for large chunks of the game.
I still have a Gjallarhorn on all six characters, since any Patrol mission/quest accommodates its low Attack.
Also, I still have my Warlock VoG gear, because it looks awesome.
And the Messenger...
But yeah, not much reason to keep other stuff from Year 1.

Crucible?
Since the Shot Package ban, I've been meaning to shard my shotties, yes, but Stranger's Rifle is still pretty good.
Stranger's Rifle is great
A few weekends ago I brought up a baby warlock. Hitting level 16 was like easy mode because I could use my 170 Stranger's Rifle.
I also use it a lot in crucible.

I'm not.
I have some great guns with great rolls, and if all of my other gear is high enough, I can still use my Mida whenever I want.
My crash is still a beast in crucible even after 3 nerfs. Can't keep me down, baby.
Also, I'm holding onto some of it because I like to believe that maybe in a few years, I'll be rewarded for holding onto some of that gear. Could you imagine Bungie doing something like letting you ascend some year one gear for year 3 stats if you held onto it that long?
That'd be fuckin sweet.

I purged most year 1 armor
and a bunch of mediocre legendary weapons I was saving.
But I'll never purge my Painted Sorg rare scout rifle, or a handful of other weapons, like Thorn, because they're still good in normalized crucible modes.
