I am so unbelievably hyped for this. This trailer absolutely gives me goosebumps, and it actually refrains from giving away the entire plot and best scenes (presumably), unlike most trailers these days.
The best part of the trailer is undoubted Han Solo replying to Rey's "There were stories about what happened."
"It's true. All of it. The Dark Side. The Jedi. They're real." Considering Han's position about "some ancient" religion at the beginning of Episode IV . . . it's pretty powerful to hear Han telling us about the Jedi.
It also goes to show just how little the general public know about what happened, probably even going as far back as Order 66 and before. They don't know anything about the Sith and Jedi. Palpatine was just some old guy that took control, and Vader was just his enforcer, and the Rebels were just rebels. They don't know anything about Sith and Jedi and the Force.

It makes me wonder, because the jedi were pretty publicly known during the clone wars era, what happened? Did the empire erase all knowledge of the jedi? Maybe they made it taboo to talk about them, or got the public hating them by laying the blame for the clone wars and/or the rise of the empire at their feet. I'm sure this has been covered in expanded universe material but I've only recently started looking into the EU.

Mostly I think it was just time.
It was twenty years or so from The Clone Wars to the fall of the Empire. And another forty since then.
Plus I don't really believe the Jedi were that widely known even before the Clone Wars. Folks on Coruscant knew of them, sure. But how many people in the galaxy ever saw a Jedi first hand? Even at the height of their power, they would have bee mythological figures for most people.

In Episode 1 Watto, on Tatooine, knew of the Jedi tricks =]
I am curious about this too. I think what they were trying to say was that people didn't know what had happened BETWEEN the jedi and sith. Majority of people didn't know the Sith existed. Palpatine essentially used his political powers to turn the population (which we really dont get to interact with) against the Jedi. And from that, you have the rebels. From the point of a regular person, it would make sense that alot of people had no clue what exactly was happening.

I look at like this (which could very well be wrong):
Most of the galaxy's population has heard of the Jedi, and knows basically the truth about them (Force-wielding, basically a big police force, etc.). But to most (99.99% of the galaxy), they are legends. Literally legends. Everyone sort of "accepts" that they're real, but for the most part, no one has every actually seen them, only heard rumors about them and what they can do. So I would imagine, realistically, most probably don't believe they exist. They're just these mythical, legendary figures that people talk about.
I mean, I know there were quite a few Jedi at one (thousands?), but there is no way there were enough of them running around that even the tiniest fraction of a percentage of the galaxy's total population ever encountered them.
Now add that it's been over sixty years since the Jedi were an active presence, and you end up with a lot of folks that are young that probably have never even HEARD of the Jedi, let alone seen one. Of course most people don't believe they ever existed. Why would they?

That's actually something that I love them touching up on. We live in an age where a not-too-long-ago global event such as the Holocaust is dismissed as propaganda by some. Imagine a series of events spanning an entire star system, or Galaxy...
That gets me very interested.
Haven't seen an Abrams movie that I didn't like yet, and he's managed to breathe new life into the stale Star Trek universe, so no doubt this will be the first good Star Wars since Empire Strikes Back.
I just pray that we find out if the Republic Commando division has a presence... Or if Phasma is their legacy. :3c
not enough lens flare, won't watch
