The way light determines drops is limiting character choice (Destiny)

Early on, having your light determine drop light was a nice way to guarantee that most drops were upgrades for you.

But now it's not. Let's say I am capable of light 304, but I just got a new 280 armsday gun. I don't know if I want this gun to be my go-to primary, so I don't want to burn my hard-earned 296 blues to imbue it without first leveling it up and trying it out. But when I try it out, my light goes down to 299 and suddenly my drops are worse than when I use the crappy 310 autorifle I got from the raid. Because light level affects drops, the game is forcing me to use weapons I don't want to use in order to give myself a chance at weapons I might someday use to upgrade the weapons that I do want to use.

It's bad.

Bungie, please read this and take note. I'd love it if you could just keep track of what my highest light level achieved is and use that for determining the light level of drops (and engram decryptions). I don't like feeling like using my favorite weapons is also gimping my future drops.

Wait a sec: your light level affects only what they decrypt as at the time you decrypt them.

You can run around with year one weapons and still level up when you visit the cryptarch.

Yes, but you get activity rewards from nightfalls and pvp which are based on your light level when you complete the activity. You get drops from bosses which are not engrams (just straight items) which are based on your light level when that item dropped. So last night when I was using my new 280 gunsmith weapons, I was hurting my chances to get a 290+ drop.

It's bad.

The road to and including the raid was fantastic, and way better than I ever dreamed. After that, it's worse than I could have imagined. I have zero motivation to keep playing this game except for when new stuff hits (Trials / Hard King's fall). How the endgame is worse than even at original release is completely staggering.

To me that's fine, I already got a great experience up to and through King's Fall normal. I will just dip in and out when there's new stuff to do. But still, what am I going to do with my 305 weapon when everyone else in trials has 320?
