Intriguing New Golgoroth Strategy (Destiny)

https://www.reddit.com/r/DestinyTheGame/comments/3qqi05/spoiler_golgoroth_super_crit_theory/
So, someone on reddit pointed this out:
WHERE IT STARTED
It has been confirmed that a high impact critical hit on golgoroth's back while standing on the pool of reclaimed light does massive damage (I'm calling it SUPER CRIT). However, that would mean that you would also be taking golgoroth's gaze because you are shooting his back.
You get 10x damage with a critical hit to his back, and 10x damage for standing in the pool of reclaimed light. The damage with one sniper shot was around 600K without any modifiers (more on this later).
THE THEORY
The goal is to have all but the current gaze holder (5 people) in the pool of reclaimed light and shoot him at the EXACT same time (firing squad style; with your highest impact weapon; Sleeper Simulants and snipers would be best. Rockets don't work.). Immediately after his back closes and begins to turn around, one of the 5 people standing in the pool will randomly get his gaze and needs to jump out and deal with the seeker axion bolts. The rest of the DPS team will get ready to SUPER CRIT again.[/inlinecode]
I'd be interested in trying variations on this if any of the PS4 crew is up for it. Specifically I'd like to test & see how much damage a sniper shot does to his back while standing in a pool and seeing if we can bounce golgoroth's gaze back and forth between two teams just sniping his back (with the pool buff).

very interesting

Intriguing New Golgoroth Strategy

This sounds really interesting! I wonder how much you could stack here. Even if it doesn't turn out to be a practical strategy, I'd love to try it once just to see what you could get with just one shot stacking the pool + Melting Point + Weapons of Light + Back Critical.

I wonder if it would be possible to bring down the big ugly in a single round of 6 orbs.
*5 players group up together on 1 side of the platform, hide from Golgoroth's view.
* Lone player on the opposite side dances around in front of Golgoroth to get his attention.
* Group of 5 (firing squad) lines up their shot, counts down, fires.
* The new gazeholder jumps backwards out of the pit and handles the orbs. The rest of the firing squad runs behind Golgoroth, group is joined by the lone distraction-causer.
* Firing squad thins out adds and brings down orb directly above them. Count down and fire at Golgoroth.
* New gazeholder jumps backwards out, firing squad rotates behind golgoroth, is joined by first gazeholder, patter repeats.
Sound doable?

Totally doable, but it would have to be really fast because you only have 10 seconds for the gaze.

Just split up into two teams of three. Then all three jump back out once the gaze is acquired and the other three hit him from behind. That way you should have plenty of time to repeat the process. You'd be sacrificing a bit of damage, but if you have high impact sniper rifles and this method gives you around 500+k damage per-person you're still talking about 1.5 million damage each time you swap the gaze.

*20 seconds of gaze. Also...

I wonder if 5 people shooting his back at once would count as multiple gaze changes...

It'd be tight, but I think it is manageable. As the firing squad rotates around, they can pick off the couple of thrall that spawn. Then all focus fire on the orb, stand in the pool, "3...2...1... BAM".

I suspect the pools will hang around for their typical 20 (?) seconds, swapping the gaze between sides should take what, around 10 seconds & the gaze lasts something like 15-20 seconds...

Swapping gazes is damage based
by ZackDark , Not behind you. NO! Don't look., Thursday, October 29, 2015, 19:52 (3408 days ago) @ dogcow
A single 1000-Yard Stare shot takes the gaze, while it takes several Hung Jury shots to take it. To optimize time, then, you'd need a sniper/rocket. Bear in mind, however, that it is not instantaneous, no matter how much damage you put out. It takes a second or two for the message to appear, so don't leave it to the last second to try switching gazes.
I'd like to take this opportunity to remind you guys that you can only take 6 gazes, no matter how many orbs you shoot down. The bastard keeps his back closed during the 6th.

This is known. What would be interesting to find out is would doing this burn through multiple gazes at once? Wouldn't that be funny? Everyone lines up & takes their shot & bam, his back closes & adds spawn. One other thing that hasn't been noted, is that when the gaze is swapped his back closes for a few (5?) seconds before opening back up. I wonder if the trigger for his back opening up (during the swapping gaze period) is time based or (belly) damage based or what.
And of course all this hinges on a couple things, first that you can hit him with multiple snipers in the back at once, second that some random guy on reddit is correct in that the pool bonus stacks with the 'back damage' bonus.

Great points all around. Let's science this!

It’s time-based. On my PS4 crew, I’m usually the gaze-holder. After killing the adds, we prepare to fight Golgy by having someone temporarily pull his gaze so that he’s looking away from me. We drop the Pool of Light and as that happens, I pull his gaze and hold it for the damage round.
And of course all this hinges on a couple things, first that you can hit him with multiple snipers in the back at once, second that some random guy on reddit is correct in that the pool bonus stacks with the 'back damage' bonus.
Yeah, I’d love to try this.

On more than one occasion I have hit Gologroth in the back with a single Hung Jury shot to pull his gaze. Does about 6K damage. As long as its a crit, it pulls his ire every time.

Odd

Maybe there's a longer grace period for lower shots or I failed to notice it was the exact same time as my sniper.

Intriguing New Golgoroth Strategy
by Blackt1g3r , Login is from an untrusted domain in MN, Thursday, October 29, 2015, 19:21 (3408 days ago) @ dogcow
Something I've been curious to try is a strategy where you forget about the reclaimed light pools and just continuously shoot Golgoroth's back. After clearing the adds, one person steals the gaze then everyone else starts pounding him in the back until one of them acquires the gaze. I haven't run the encounter enough to have any idea if this would be feasible or not. Is there anything I'm unaware of that would prevent this from working?

Possible two-man

Apparently Golgoroth's gazes run out and you get more adds which means you won't deal that much damage this way. Reading through the post on reddit, it like people have suggested using this to 2 man golgoroth. By combining the pool of reclaimed light with a shot to Golgoroth's back you could deal significant damage each round of gazes. With a full fireteam you could do the same with coordinated shots to the back with the pool of light.

Possible Challenge mode, use no globes?
I question if it's possible in that you don't get sustained buffed DPS. It'd be 1 sniper shot * 5 guardians * 10 back damage bonus / time it takes to setup for the next shot versus several (8?) sniper shots * 4 guardians * 10 pool bonus damage / time between pools.
I don't know, it certainly might be possible though!

No pool emblem, here we come! ;)

It's worth trying, I guess. It will probably prove impractical.

Perhaps, but I'm thinking it might work out similar to the templar no-teleport method; more challenging, but way faster if you can pull it.

So, it sounds like you can do massive amounts of damage with this strategy, but it doesn't actually deduct Golgoroth's health. Apparently damage to his back doesn't count.

The wipe-screen sucks then, because it clearly lists damage done to the back as well.

Yeah, I should have prefaced that comment claiming it won't work with a "according to some random guy on reddit"
Seems to always be wrong, adding damage from the previous boss fight etc.
