A single 1000-Yard Stare shot takes the gaze, while it takes several Hung Jury shots to take it. To optimize time, then, you'd need a sniper/rocket. Bear in mind, however, that it is not instantaneous, no matter how much damage you put out. It takes a second or two for the message to appear, so don't leave it to the last second to try switching gazes.

I'd like to take this opportunity to remind you guys that you can only take 6 gazes, no matter how many orbs you shoot down. The bastard keeps his back closed during the 6th.
