Three of Coins figured out? (Destiny)

Still in debate, but it seems some redditor has finally figured out how to force 3oC to drop Exotics in a reliable way. Tests allegedly show a 90% chance of dropping Exotics, though that 10% could be a mistake of his.

Three of Coins figured out?

I tried it just once last night and didn't get anything. I'll try a few more times before I decide if it's a legit method.

What did bug me is that out of those 3 strikes, I came away with 10 armor materials but no weapon parts. I've got guns that have been waiting on infusion or just parts to upgrade nodes for a couple or three weeks now. I'm in no way a hoarder, and only keep a handful of weapons on each character. It bugs me because I have to grind out so long for parts.

Back on 3 of Coins, a few nights ago I had 2 exotic engrams drop from one of the shield brothers. That was the first I've seen it happen.

Yeah, I can't help thinking that it might have just been dumb luck for those Reddit guys. I don't know why it would work the way they're describing. But even if it did, having to wait 'til every third strike, and jump out in between sessions, doesn't seem terribly efficient. I might end up using a few less ToC but they're cheap anyway. Weighing fun, time, and effort, I think I'd rather just stay in the playlist and keep using one ToC each strike like I've been doing.

It boils down to "don't use three of coins more than once every 30 minutes" which we know is wrong. Even if they were 100% correct with their predictions, it's still only useful if you have some kind of shortage of 3s of Coins, which no one should. I haven't talked to Xur in 2 weeks and I still have 30 of the damn things.

Want a good 3oC strategy? Always keep the buff up, no matter what. Your exotics per minute will be waaaay higher than what these guys are getting, and you'll be playing the game the way you want to instead of endlessly grinding out strikes all day.

I think they got lucky

I think the buff is tied to the Tarot card. Before the linked thread, there was another one on reddit about the tarot card "Three of Coins".

When i googled "three of coins tarot" i got results for "Three of pentacles," with a pentacle being a medallion (coin). The card references a trinity working together (master, apprentice, and something else).

The description for 3oC says that it is stackable, but it doesn't say in what way. I'm guessing that it is stackable as a fireteam, and not stackable as an individual (as evidenced by people burning several at once and not getting anything).

My only circumstantial evidence is that every time i've participated in King's fall, and someone says "don't forget your 3oC" at the war priest or golgoroth i've gotten an exotic engram. I guess that is b/c many (if not all) of the folks in the fireteam used a 3oC.

I also wonder if it's more likely to drop an exotic engram from an Ultra that already has engrams in it's loot pool. Most Ultras drop house banners, axiomatic beads, or silken codex (if anything). The War Priest, Golgoroth, and the new strike bosses have engrams in their loot pools. It's possible that the 3oC works better on these, b/c they have a higher chance of dropping an engram (any engram), which in turn increases the chances of it being exotic.

EDIT: i think that they "got lucky" by getting Ultras that have engrams in their loot table.

So TLDR: i thinkt 3oC is stackable as a fireteam, and probably works best in King's Fall and new strikes. It will work less frequently on Ultras that do not normally drop engrams.

I have no 3 of Coins, because I have no Coins. Either my luck getting Coin drops is awful, I don't play frequently enough, or I don't play the right things to get Coins. Either way, the vast (by my standards) reserves I built up when Year Two dropped ran out about a month ago. As it is right now, I didn't have enough to buy anything last week, and I won't have enough to buy anything this week, and I'm loathe to blow my pathetic stash on 3 of Coins only to have something good come along the following week and be missing the difference.

Crazy. I have oodles of strange coins (62, currently) and I pretty much only do the raid once per week, maybe 1 strike, and then PvP a bit. I get almost all of mine from either bounty turn-ins or engram decryption. I honestly don't remember getting them, but I just always have a crapton of them lying around. I spend my entire pile every week on 3 of Coins because I know I'm going to get a bazillion more strange coins the following week. Maybe they're a PvP reward more often than I think?

Maybe, because I am broke for Strange Coins, too. I blew all of my Strange Coins within the first two weeks of TTK dropping (I had 117 of them the first weekend!), and I've been struggling since the hotfix where they lowered the drops of them from bounties and engrams or whatever it was they did. I usually hover at around 15 to 20 of them, which doesn't get you enough 3oC to keep one active at all times, which was how I played the first few weeks.

FWIW, I almost never touch PvP and I have about 200 coins right now. That is down from the 360 I had when I started playing TTK, but still, I feel like I get tons of them. It might just be down to how much each player spends. I've never bought more than 20 ToC at a time, certainly not enough to keep the buff up all week. And I think the only exotic I've bought in the last couple weeks was Zhalo Supercell. I already had pretty much everything else.
