Xbox One Elite controller (Destiny)

This thing is ridiculous. In a good way. Is anyone else here using one?

I had been using Kontrol Freeks, so I opted for the highest thumbstick on the right side, medium on the left, but having my spare fingers rest on the paddles instead of gripping the controller made that uncomfortable, so I switched to medium on both.

I can definitely see, conceptually, how the paddles give an advantage. Basically, you never have to take your thumbs off their sticks, so you can jump and slide and swap weapons or whatever while still tracking your target.

In practice, I am having a hard time training my brain, and I end up having a brain fart and doing a combination of paddles and buttons in the heat of battle and hitting the wrong input periodically. I think that the paddles are going to take a while to get used to.

Right now I have:
Bottom left paddle = jump
Top left paddle = duck
So my left hand mostly handles movement

Bottom right paddle = x/reload
Top right paddle = swap weapons
So my right hand mostly handles aiming/shooting

I use two paddles, one for jump and one for reload, and I use the tall right stick. I can't go back to my regular controller anymore.

This is exactly why I changed my mind about the Elite Controller. ;)

I tried to buy one at the Halo 5 launch event, but didn't talk to the right people. (All the ones that were obvious were spoken for, so I gave up. Kevin Hurd was more persistent, though, and found someone who would sell him one. :) )

Once I got home, I started thinking about all of the times I found myself at a disadvantage because I'd become accustomed to something non-standard, but was forced to use standard gear/settings. (Kontrol Freeks are a perfect example. I love 'em - and I now play worse without 'em.)

Decided I'd live with a regular controller for the time being. :)

Didn't want to do something that would impact your run at the super MLG pro tournament worldwide tour? ;-). I get what you're saying, but I don't expect performance to matter that much if I happen to be playing somewhere other than my couch.

This is why I don't use the paddles. I am using it to play with default controls and it still feels amazing :)

Just out of curiosity, what's the point of using an Elite at that point? I mean, I know you can change the stick height and use hair triggers and such, but I always thought the paddles were the big selling point.

I want to get one, but the price point is just a little high for me right now. Maybe after Christmas . . .

All the features look great, but the build quality alone is that much better than a standard controller?

I guess I just assumed it was about on par with the default controller, and the real selling point was all the added features.

I was pretty bad at doing the relic running for Oryx until I got the elite controller. I don't want to say I got the controller for running relic...but I got the controller to run relic. Did you know you can remap the buttons on the standard controller with the new Xbox One update? I experimented with putting the right thumbstick click as jump and it actually improved my jumping skills.

PS: First post here in years but I've been a lurker for over a decade. Keep up the good work.

Can you map any of the paddles to 'don't miss the next platform?' I'll buy one today if you can.

Good to see you around. ;) Been fun playing with you this past week!

I have mine set up as follows:
Upper right paddle: jump
Upper left paddle: sprint
Both trigger stops in
Domed right stick

I found using only two paddles worked best for me. I actually like having sprint mapped to the paddle over other things. I've found I rarely get sprint locked now which has been wonderful.

Sprint! Interesting, I hadn't thought about that

Sprint is the main reason I've been interested in getting one. I'm fairly certain that the thumbstick drift that I'm getting on my first two controllers is from repeatedly clicking the thumbstick button during the weird unspecified sprint cooldown, or when I'm definitely seeing the sprint animation, but feel like I'm moving at normal speed.

The "airstrike" part of the Oryx fight is going to destroy my new controller in no time :p

I tried mapping sprint to a paddle for a bit and didn't like it because it clicking in on the thumbstick wasn't an issue for me. I'm more interested in mapping ABXY so I don't have to lift my right thumb.

After some good play time this weekend, I'm getting more used to using the paddles. I reverted back to the good ol' A button during the jumping portions of the Raid just because I still get occasional brain farts, but in regular play it is starting to feel a more natural.

Using the default paddle positions
A--B
X--Y

And default settings for both Halo and Destiny. I've played around with the stick sensitivities and use a short left stick and tall right stick and found a sweet spot for myself.

Also I've done both short trigger pulls and adjusted the trigger range in the config app to resolve the issue with firing plasma pistols, though hilariously I still need to do it on the left trigger as I laughed out loud when I hopped into a ghost and found my short trigger pull was not boosting me quite the way I intended.

Absolutely loving it so much with Halo, and pretty happy with it with Destiny.
