Anyone else besides Stabbim like racing games?

Dirt Rally finally hit PS4 and Xbox One this week. Haven't played much of it, yet, but from what I have played, it's the rally game I've been waiting for. The first Dirt was probably the last great rally game, with both Dirt 2 and 3 focusing on things other than rally (stadium and baja trucks in Dirt 2 and Gymkhana in Dirt 3). While those distractions were both incredibly fun, the actual rally side of the games suffered for it.

Dirt Rally is a return to the old-school hardcore rally game, offering only real rally and rally cross events and no distractions. It's got a really hardcore scene on the PC, I know, and I can't honestly say just how well the console versions hold up to that, but I can definitely say that it feels great.

If you're into racing games, and especially into time trials, Dirt Rally is the real deal.

I'll play more Forza 6 eventually, stabbim--I promise!

I just did my second event. I crashed out in the first thirty seconds of the first race out of four. I did not compete in any of the subsequent races of that event. It just moved on to the next event in a different location, with me earning zero points for the event I crashed out of.

There's no rewind, you forfeit money if you restart a race, the damage you inflict on your vehicle carries over between races if you don't fix it, etc. It's refreshingly difficult and realistic in a time when even "simulation" games such as Forza let you rewind time during races, show braking lines, etc. I appreciate that Forza makes things accessible, and I do love that game, but it's really nice to see an actual hardcore racing game.

It is fantastic, though. Years ago, RalliSport Challenge 2 blew my mind with its weather effects and scenery and the way it really sold the feeling of bombing around these rugged landscapes. Since then I hadn't ever seen a rally game that gave me the same feeling. Until now.

I am genuinely terrified of getting into the Group B cars, though.

I wouldn't, it would be painful to take it on streets. My dad let me borrow is BMW M3 for a couple weeks. It was fun to drive it around Seattle but it was also very painful to have to restrain a beast of a car like that driving down streets. It wasn't until I got to the country side with curved roads... damn. I may have broke a couple speed limits and suggested curved speed signs..

I bought at GT back in 2005 when they changed the body style. It was stiff and bulky, but I could drift that thing for days. I had way too much fun on the old mountain roads in Arkansas where I grew up. Then I dipped under a logging truck while sliding around a hairpin and had to reupholster my seat.

Yeah, I bet!

Mine is a 2002 that I bought right before I graduated high school in December of '06. Been daily driving it ever since (having a paid-off car is the best!), and I don't plan on ever getting rid of it. I'll eventually get a different daily driver, for sure, but that Mustang isn't going anywhere.

I loved the first dirt and agree that 2 and 3 felt cheapened. I had steering wheels for both the Original Xbox and 360, that really makes the racing experience more fun. Been a long time since I've gotten into a racing game though. I never really had a good group to race with, and it always seems like the skill gap is much larger between people than with shooters.

I didn't eat the fence. I slid right up to it after I got airborne off the second bridge. My fence dodging skills were refined from my youth. It did break both of my mufflers loose when I landed.

It's too bad I ran off there because that was going to be a record lap time. I usually backed off but I was doing at least 65 when I caught air off the bridge.

Well, that was 16 years ago, and they put up gates and cameras the year after we stopped. There's plenty of other dirt roads to race on, but that loop had some nice challenging corners. I owned the corners after the back straight stretch. I still remember the line I ran through those.

I love them in small doses. I hit a wall with them fairly early (I'm just not very good at them) but I have lots of fun jumping in every now and then. Forza Horizon 2 is fantastic for that. I used to love the old rally sport games on the original Xbox... Maybe I'll check out the new Dirt!

Forza 6 is close, but for whatever reason, Forza has always felt just slightly floaty to me. Dirt Rally feels grounded in a way that Forza doesn't, somehow.

And the courses are just perfect. So far the logging roads through Wales have been my favorite, but I've only done 5 events.

Blowing out a tire about forty seconds into a race, and somehow still coming back and finishing only +10 seconds behind the leader has been a real highlight so far.

And stabbim, I'm starting wish I had just gone ahead and got this on the Xbox so I could compare our times and I could challenge you in the dailies! ):

Probably because off all the bumpiness! Personally I think Forza feels great, but Dirt certainly has more opportunities to make you aware of the road surface.

The Renault Alpine is amazing. I know the Mini's supposed to be everyone's favorite, but I really like driving the Renault more. It gets around hairpins much easier. Haven't gotten a Lancia Fulvia yet, but I'm really looking forward to it. I think it'll be a good middle ground between the other two, and Fulvias sound fantastic.

The 70's cars are a lot twitchier. I found the Stratos really difficult to drive until I fiddled with the differential. That car's really squirrely in Forza, too.

I know I said it already, but I'm genuinely afraid of moving up. The Delta S4 is my favorite racing car ever, but after feeling what the 70's cars are like, I'm kinda nervous. Having AWD (which none of the 70's machines have) will help stabilize things, but it's still got double the power of anything else I've driven so far, and things are already happening too fast. :)

Wales is great. I'm not sure which stage it is exactly, but there's one where you spend what feels like half the course going through tight hairpins in a river valley, cutting back and forth through streams.

Monte Carlo's really a bitch at times, just because you can fall off the map if you go off course. Great environment, though.

Me too. I guess the nice thing about this game in that regard is that we can still compare times manually and be just as well off.

There's probably some truth in that. I just feel like some of the Forza cars don't have as much weight as they should or something. Forza is still amazing!

I absolutely hated the Mini. FWD sucks and the Mini under steers like crazy. Down shifting to 2nd, mashing the throttle, and kicking the rear end out with the Renault has saved my ass so many times, and it feels satisfying in a way not many other racing games have matched.

Yeah, same. In any new Forza I am confident and immediately crank the AI difficulty and turn off all assist and nearly always finish first.

Yeah, ditto. I finished my first Championship in 3rd, and felt totally okay with that. It's very, very easy to get overconfident in this game. I'll be scooting along, setting the pace a good 15 seconds ahead of the competition. One mistake later, I'm rumbling in the to the finish line a 50 seconds (or more!) behind.

Of course, I'm now realizing that you're playing on different hardware. That,plus personal preference means YMMV I guess. But in general, sensitivity a bit lower than default and linearity a bit higher seems to be the way to go if the defaults feel twitchy.

I wanted to like it, but I tried for days to fix the handling and it just wasn't happening - there is no combination of settings that can save it, as far as I could tell. Even out of the box, Dirt Rally feels much better.

Yeah, honestly, I'm not sure why I bought it on the PS4, other than it's the console I was using when I realized it was out. I do think I would enjoy it more with the Xbox controller. The PS4 one isn't bad, but the triggers have way less pull until stop than the Xbox One, so I feel like my throttle and brake inputs are really extreme.

So far the only cars I own are the Renault Alpine A110, Ford Escort MkII, and now the Renault Clio for rally cross. I love the first two, but hate the Clio. Mainly I think I just strongly dislike FWD cars. I did alright with it--I won my first rally cross championship, but I just do no like driving it. But the AWD cars cost about twice what I have right now. I'm thinking the next one I buy and try my hand at will be the Audi Quattro Hill Climb car.
