Forum Categories (DBO)

by ncsuDuncan @, Wednesday, September 11, 2013, 19:33 (3259 days ago)

That's right, avatars aren't the only upgrade in store for the DBO Forum - we now have six categories to sort threads into!

The idea here is to make it easier for everyone to post off-topic and short-lived threads while keeping things organized and easy to find.

The default view is "All Categories"; click on the category name next to each thread to view that specific one, or use the dropdown menu at the top-right of the Forum Index page (right below the search box).

If you want your default Forum Index view to only display certain categories (e.g. filter out Off-Topic), just visit your User Settings page and look at the "My category selection" area. Check the boxes for the categories you wish to see, and your default Index view should automatically change to "My Selection". You can always go back to viewing "All Categories" or each individual category by using the dropdown menu near the top-right of the page. Unchecking all of the boxes will revert your default view back to "All Categories".

-------

Destiny - Any news or discussion directly related to Bungie or Destiny.

- Anything from the Bungie Blog.
- Press articles about Bungie or Destiny.
- Story and gameplay discussion.
- Official screenshots and videos.

Fan Creations - If the focus of the thread is something you (or another community member) created, then use this category for Show and Tell.

- Fan art/screenshots.
- Theater clips, machinima, montages.
- Community podcasts and analysis videos.
- Fan fiction.

DBO - Conversations about our site and the people that frequent it. This is where newcomers should introduce themselves.

- Site feedback and requests.
- PAX/LAN/meetup plans and post-mortems.
- Member introductions.

Recruitment - Plan game nights, share your gamertag, and enlist the help of your DBO brethren.

- Co-op Night announcements.
- Everyday fireteam formation.
- The game does NOT have to be Destiny.

Gaming - Any gaming news or discussion that doesn't belong in one of the above categories.

- Articles from Kotaku/IGN/etc. unrelated to Bungie or Destiny.
- Discussion of non-Bungie games, e.g. Halo 5, Mario Kart 64, Madden 2008, Call of Duty 17.
- Console news.

Off-Topic - Anything and everything that doesn't fit into one of the above categories.

- Keep it clean!

I'll make a locked/sticky thread with this info eventually; for now I'd love to hear feedback from everyone on the categories listed above.

I did notice that selecting a category from the dropdown doesn't actually load that category, at least not in Firefox. Seems to work fine in Chrome.

Very interesting. I don't believe I've ever seen a forum that can have categories (aka subforums) but still show everything all combined on one page. It looks like replies are locked into the category the original poster chose. And it looks like you already moved a couple of example topics into each category?

I'll probably just keep my view on All Categories but I appreciate the additions. They'll probably help make the forum feel more friendly to people not used to the glorious HBO style. :)

Duncan, this is seriously too legit to quit. I thought it would push threads to the periphery, but it is a much more organized way to search old threads to keep up or remember about coop night. This is boss.

This should be Pinned to the top of the page since it, in essence, would help any newcomer (or those H.B.O plebes :P) know of where (and what) is posted here in this forum. (As if that wasn't obvious already)

I've got mixed feelings about this, honestly. I've enjoyed the careening nature of a lot of bungie.org threads.

Now I feel self-conscious about my careens.

As a reader I'll probably ignore it. As a poster I'll try not to over-think it.

I just look at it as another level of filtering when you want to find related topics.

I'm pretty sure that's precisely how Duncan envisions it.

For many people, it's a tidbit of information that might not ever get used.

For folks who might get annoyed seeing threads about, say, game nights amongst forum dwellers (playing something other than Destiny), it's an easy way to pare back what they have to look at.

For people who WANT to post a note about an off-topic game night (to stick with the same example), but feel guilty at making a non-Destiny-related post on a Destiny forum, it's a way to feel less guilty; they know that anyone who is bothered doesn't even have to see it.

Apologies - it wasn't meant to be a dig at all. It was an easy example of how Categories can be useful.

Claude already covered one aspect of this, but I wanted to add something:

You don't have to stick to the Category the thread is posted in.

Careening into off-topic territory within a Destiny thread is perfectly fine, even if it means those posts aren't technically in the correct category. If I wanted to be really picky, I could easily split the offending posts into a new thread and change the category. (I can also merge threads, if needed, but that's an entirely different scenario.) I don't imagine thread splitting will be necessary very often, though.

Careen away!

isn't it a rule that every relevant thread must have a branch careen into off-topicness 90% of the time, every time?

Isn't it?
