Cross Gen is bad (Gaming)

Man.
Gran Turismo 7, God of War, and the New Horizon West are now all going to be on PS4 as well. Way to design a game that utilizes the tech well. I was so excited for games that utilized stuff like the ssd to stream and load things in a way impossible on old gen… but I guess we'll have to wait longer.
It's quite disappointing to see the only real upgrades on either side to be 4K rendering, and better frame rates. I feel like this whole cross gen and smart delivery thing is really really holding us back from crazy new unique stuff. It's a bummer.

Ehhhhh the hard drives on PS3 and PS4 were basically the same… there wasn't the generational leap like there was with the SSD. I mean, the PS4 Pro shipped with a 5400 RPM laptop drive…

Better hardware means a better experience. What is now seamless on current hardware can be done on old hardware, just with (more) seams. Cross-gen is fine, it just takes more engineering to make it work on a wider variety of hardware, but the lack of supply of new hardware makes spending the money to support older hardware sensible.

The ultra fast loading stuff has already been done in cross gen games (eg Miles Morales), so I'll assume they are here too.
then again what's holding back crazy and unique stuff is more down to business considerations and AAA aesthetics.

I guess I was thinking bigger… like engines designed around very fast access to data and assets, so the very fundamental architecture of the game simply wouldn't work on slower devices. But well, whatever.

To design an engine so radically different that slow access couldn't be reintroduced would be highly risky. No one is going to toss out decades of design paradigms overnight.

I'm kinda with you. I don't think my eyes will be able to detect better graphics going forward. FPS is never something I've worried much about. I've heard rumors that Sony might have some innovation in the AI space, and I'm up for that.
A factor you don't mention is Covid, and how JIT manufacturing has led to a worldwide shortage of, among other things, PS5s. That has to affect their business decisions regarding exclusives, but heck, some of Sony's exclusives aren't truly exclusive any more.

Cross gen will be a thing as long as only 500 people have an Xbox Series or a PS5.
Releasing a big budget title on only those consoles is financial suicide at the moment.
Console SSDs will kill one thing though…

I have… more than once stared at a loading screen for too long not realizing I had to hit X to continue and it had already loaded ages ago.
