Anybody from here play crucible in high frame rate mode? How is it? Is there much difference between 60 and 120? Just curious.

I do. It rules (Halo Infinite, too!). It’s not as necessary as the jump from 30 to 60, but it’s still sort of difficult to go back. The difference is really noticeable in Destiny when I stop playing Crucible and go back to PvE.

I messed with it but I needed to give up 4K HDR with my setup and I didn't think the gains were worth the cost.

Can you do 1080 HDR, or does 120hz mode turn off HDR entirely?

With my setup it turned it off entirely. But I think newer TVs would not force that?

It’s tricky. The Xbox only enables HDR with the 4K mode. There is a 1440p monitor (Don’t remember which) that will accept a 4K signal and downscale it to 1440p to give you HDR. Apparently the HDR implementation on that monitor isn’t great, though.

Unless you get a new 4K TV with 120hz, you sort of have to pick resolution and HDR or 120hz mode.

I disagree that it’s not worth it, though. I play the entire game on a 1440 27” monitor, that I bought specifically to play games that support 120hz. It’s right next to my 4K tv, so I’ve switched back and forth quite a bit, and the frame rate is definitely worth it. It might be a tougher decision if Destiny’s HDR implementation was better.

AFIAK there's no mass consumer HDMI port with enough bandwidth to do HDR @ 120fps

HDMI 2.1 can do HDR at 4K 120hz.

Isn’t that what HDMI 2.1 is for? Lots of new TVs have 2.1 ports.

A lot of those are fake 2.1. For whatever reason, the geniuses behind HDMI licensing not only let you label a TV as HDMI 2.1 without supporting all 2.1 features, they even specifically prohibit new displays from saying they're 2.0 - they officially consider 2.0 as no longer existing and 2.1 as meaning "at least supports 2.0 spec". All the features that are 2.1 are optional to implement. They're supposed to technically have a separate breakout box of what 2.1 features the display supports.

I wish I was making this up.

Yeah. You gotta check each feature on each TV individually! It's a mess.

IMO the important ones for gaming are:

UHD@120hz
Dynamic HDR
Variable Refresh Rate
Quick Frame Transport

How much larger an HDR signal is?

Is the current standard 10-bit? Would that mean 4x from 8-bit?

UHD HDR @ 120hz is 32.27 Gbit/s. SDR is 25.82 Gbit/s.

10 Bit requires 25% more data than 8 bit.

8 x 1.25 = 10.

Good thing I asked lol

I was doing the math over possible shades of R, G or B, but assigning it to bandwidth. Whoops.
