Quick question about your console setups (Gaming)

by Revenant1988 ⌂ @, How do I forum?, Saturday, May 24, 2014, 06:42 (3633 days ago)

Hello All,

How many of you are running your 360, XBONEs and\or PS4's on wi-fi instead of a wired connection?

For the most part, are you satisfied with the quality of your gaming\streaming in that setup?

Thanks for the feedback!

Both my 360 and PS4 are on wi-fi.

When it comes to online gaming and streaming, I have no issue: Sigbias is SATISFIED.

I have been running my 360 through wi-fi for years now, with lots of online gaming. I have loved it and never had any trouble with it. I have even had buddies bring over their 360's and we have played on Xbox Live via my wi-fi network with 4 different systems and experienced no issues.

I have also had my Xbox One set up on wi-fi the whole time I have had it, playing lots of Titanfall with no issue.

My 360 was originally on a wired connection, and then after a few years I reluctantly switched to wireless. The only thing that was severely impacted was streaming videos. The Netflix quality is frequently dropping off and streaming my own collection via Windows Media Center, Media Browser 3 or ChromeCast leaves me wishing that a wired connection were still feasible.

For online gaming, I've found that wireless is perfectly adequate. (note my setup is only Wireless N running @ 2.4GHz)

I usually run wi-fi because I have one cord running to my room and I like to have my computer online.

But, if shit's getting laggy, time to plug in the xbox. And that's how I won the Schoolyb owl. True story.

I mostly run wired, but sometimes I switch the 360's location from my bedroom to the living room, where I use it exclusively through wireless. Hell, it works better than when wired...

(Probably my own fault. I crimped all the ethernet cables I used, so I probably fucked up that one)

I just got Google Fiber, so all my next-gen consoles are plugged in directly to that, and the last-gen are through a wired switch. And now this is more coming out as bragging. So I'll stop.

I don't mind it much. Guess I've read too much utopian sci-fi in my youth. Something about a monolithic AI knowing literally everything about everyone's life in order to help us be more productive/entertained is very inspirational to me.

Anyone ever think like they're trying to strangle the next p2p-based YouTube before it happens?

(didn't they avoid mentioning p2p or filesharing in the types of things that are allowed?)

Diabolical. Just looked up their Privacy Policy and they already associate all your TV usage with your Google account (which you are required to have) and they may associate other data 'with your consent'. They're definitely smart: moar data for dem ads.

by RocketMoose, Sunday, May 25, 2014, 14:22 (3631 days ago) @ Revenant1988

The biggest thing to watch out for with a wireless connection is not the bandwidth or even the latency. It's the packet loss. Packet loss can be brutal in online multiplayer, and can show up in really strange ways (melee attacks not feeling like they register). You will notice it most in synchronous gameplay, like ODST's firefight or many online fighting games, where game state has to stay perfectly in sync between two players.

Packet loss tends to be much spikier than bandwidth or latency (assuming your roommates aren't randomly uploading/downloading massive files at random times). With wireless, you can get packet loss for all sorts of reasons - microwaving dinner, wiring in your house causing interference, or other changing environmental factors.

This isn't to say wireless can't work for gaming. Just don't look at your raw bandwidth and latency and consider it a full picture of the quality of your connection.

You should buy a new microwave. One that - you know - isn't trying to kill you.

Seriously: microwave ovens have shields designed to prevent the radiation leaking and cooking you along with dinner (it also increases efficiency AFAIK). If enough is leaking that it's interfering with your Wi-Fi then the shield is definitely damaged. It is a hazard and the unit needs replacing.

The optimal way to play a Bungie FPS is atop the Russian Woodpecker, connected to the internet via wifi, powering your console with an unshielded nuclear reactor, while heating up dinner in a crappy broken microwave.

Between the set of offices where I work and another set, there's a small hallway that has a mini fridge and a microwave on a table. I can see the hallway from my desk. One day I thought I would be funny and hide one of those remote controlled fart machines under the table that the microwave sets on. There's a guy in the other set of offices that I wanted to prank with it. Shortly after I put it under the table, an older lady in the office, definately the one I would not want to prank, went over to the microwave to heat something up. As soon as the microwave started that fart machine went off, and it would not stop farting. She freaked out. I freaked out because I didn't know why it was going off repeatedly. The guy next to me freaked out because she's the last person in the office we should be pranking. After much apologising, we investigated the problem. Turns out the microwave puts off the same frequency as a fart machine's remote. And it was plenty of radiation to go through a shelf and a table and make that fart machine go nuts.

I hated that microwave. The door always got stuck. One day it finally would not open and somebody got a new one to replace it. Rather than just throwing it out, I put it in my car and took it out to a creek with some of my buddies. We unloaded on that thing with a pretty wide variety of ammo. At the angle we were shooting, the rounds were skipping off the metal plate in the bottom and making a lot of sparks. We lined up a bunch of mags of 5.56 and tried to set it on fire. No luck, but that plate took it like a champ. Moral of the story: if you're being shot at, flip your microwave to a 45 degree angle and use it as a shield.

I should probably switch to wired, but running cables seems awkward, especially in a home I don't own.

But the performance I get is largely satisfactory.

802.11n operates on the low end just above my max internet 50MB/s and while it can have signal degradation my in game pings are always solid.

This is an important issue as I'm an american abroad so I primarily play with american friends and need to have a solid connection to make it work.

I even use wireless for the 2 machines I have sitting on this desk because the negligible improvement in my internet would not be worth the extra cabling to deal with.

Now once I get on Google Fiber (I'm partially considering where in the states I move to based off the latest list of cities they're considering) this will be a different matter.

I recently finished up the new gaming room for me and Rev(1)[IDK what her future GT is gonna be yet] and due to location, a wired setup isn't exactly ideal. So, both consoles will be wireless unless otherwise necessary.

I just wanted to hear what some of you in the field had to say about it. Sure, textbooks and conventional wisdom offer common sense solutions, but it just doesn't compare sometimes to the real deal.

Thanks ;)

I'm running my 360 on Wireless G. Speed tests indicate that this is only mildly slower than my über-fast internet. I have wireless-N support through which I would get the full speed of my internet however it's not a good connection because of the location of the router. The biggest bottleneck is probably going to be your upload speed anyway. If you have a fast upload speed then your machine will get to be host more often which means you have less lag than other people (in general, it depends on how the game is implemented of course).
