I've got to rank up! (Destiny)

by Kermit @, Raleigh, NC, Friday, October 03, 2014, 09:56 (3503 days ago)

Okay, so the fates haven't not been particularly kind, I haven't had that much time to play this week, and when I've played I haven't progressed that much. I still sitting about halfway through level 25, and I want to play the Raid tomorrow. I need to get to 26, but I'd prefer to get to 27.

So, here's the deal. I'm level one with Dead Orbit. Last night I was told that I really should focus on Vanguard unless I want to play a lot of Crucible matches (which isn't that bad), so I switched, and now I'm a level 1 Vanguard. I need to get to level three to buy legendary weapons and armor, right? I'm assuming that the best thing for me to play is the Vanguard Tiger Strike playlist as much as I can before 12 EDT tomorrow. I've already got a legendary helmet and legendary chest armor, and I've heard that's all you get from the Queen's missions.

Does anyone have better advice?

Feel free to join me if you want to help (on either Xbox).

I'll be glad when this push is done, and I can go back to just playing the game, which I do find to be a lot of fun.

Level 2 is needed for armor. Get to level 2 with Dead Orbit, and buy whatever armor you don't have. Hopefully you have enough shards to level yourself up to 26. If not, play the public events or the daily story mission. 26 and 28 give you 1 and 2 upgrade materials respectively. At 25 you can't do 28, so do 26.

Like it or not, the fastest way outside of bounties to level up your faction rep is patrol missions. Grind it out for 4 or 5 hours, and you'll bump up a level.

Fun isn't it?

You can get legendary weapons from the queen's playlist- I got two snipers out of it.

It's an option, I suppose.

You're pretty much on track. Ditch your faction for now- you can work for them later.

*I think* you need only vanguard level 2, to get more armors. Remember that upgrading the current legendary armors you have now will also increase their light, boosting your level. So, if you already have a queen's chest plate that you've sunk half your resources into, don't buy a vanguard chest piece yet, as you might very well loose light until you upgrade THAT armor.

If you can complete the weekly nightfall strike, you should boost your rep earning potential for doing vanguard strikes.

Also, do the vanguard bounties. Most of them are 'gimmies' in the sense that if you are tasked with playing a strike and not dying, and you were going into the strike playlist anyway.... When I get those and I don't have friends, I just run through a quick lvl 22 strike.

I'm sure others will disagree with me, but I think legendary armor seems to matter more than legendary weapons, at least at first. If you've already got yourself some rare weapons and they've been maxed out, use em! I went in as a 25 and wasn't a hindrance.

Normally I'd say that's really hard at level 25, but this week's is pretty easy. Easier than the heroic oddly enough. It has arc burn, and only the psions do arc damage. You can clean up if you have an arc sniper and rockets. Everybody sniping the tank and the final boss with arc damage makes the fights go surprisingly quick.

Do the Vanguard bounties for today first, the Daily Heroic Mission if possible, and the Weekly too. Then yeah, grinding the highest possible Strike playlist is you best bet beyond that.

Make sure to upgrade at least the Legendary armor you have as much as you can. I would say Rare too but you'll want to replace that if possible. If you can't by tomorrow and you're close, you can still hit 26 with one leveled up Rare piece of gear.

If you have enough Strange Coins, maybe give Xur a visit and get an Exotic piece of gear.

As far as buying gear from the Vanguard or whatever, just keep in mind you can only carry 200 Marks, and there is a limit of 100 earned per week. If you only need Arms and Legs, this should be alright if you started with at least 30 going into the week. You can get extra Marks beyond the 100 weekly limit by turning in upgrade components.

As far as Rev said, good weapons do help a good amount, but a higher Light level ups both your damage output AND armor level, keeping you alive longer and more helpful at killing the billion enemies in the Vault. I wouldn't count on getting the sniper from the Queen stuff though, I played about 12 or 13 and only got helmets and chests. It's not worth farming unless you get what you want since you can't farm Ascendant Shards there anymore, or Vanguard rep or other useful stuff, and getting a good weapon is just up to the RNG gods. I guess it's slightly better odds than in other playlists, but other playlists also give you a lot of useful items to at least breakdown instead of junk helmets that only give you your classes armor parts.

Actually, my experience is the Material Exchange marks are part of your weekly 100. It's how I max out crucible marks if I don't want to play PvP that week.

go to Xur

If you have strange coins buy some exotic armor from xur, then do as many bounties as you can (queen/vanguard) these will help level up the armor much faster. The first 3-4 upgrades shouldn't require ascendant materials.

I don't know what armor you have, but here are my thoughts (you are a warlock, correct?):

  • Do enough queen's wrath to get Helmets and chest pieces for free
  • Buy the exotic gauntlets from Xur
  • level up either dead orbit or vanguard (if you don't have any crucible marks stockpiled, then i would go with vanguard)
  • buy the legendary boots from your vanguard
  • Grind out bounties/patrol missions/random events

For reference, I have an exotic helmet, and legendary boots, gauntlets, and chest piece. They are all leveled up halfway (with just glimmer and parts). I have yet to use ascendant materials and that got me part way through 27.
