3-pages of Destiny info and art in June Game Informer

by WestCoastRonin ⌂, Tuesday, May 07, 2013, 13:19 (4009 days ago)

The June issue of Game Informer has an interview with senior engineering lead Chris Butcher and COO Pete Parsons about Destiny on Playstation 4. The Q&A is mostly about the PS4, but there are also a few tidbits about Destiny. There are also a few pieces of new concept art. Here are a few callouts:

"We're building a living world that will be continuously updated with new code and content." -Chris Butcher

"Your character is at the heart of our game. Everything you do feeds back into upgrading and modifying your character." -Chris Butcher

"We want the gear and weapons they earn, tweak, and upgrade to tell a story about where they’ve been, what they’ve done, and maybe even who they’ve aligned themselves with." - Pete Parsons

All three of these quotes are exciting to me. Is it E3 yet?

I wholeheartedly agree with this notion. However, they aren't doing justice to their goal if we can't jewel, bedazzle, and place bright flowers all over a mighty assault rifle like below.

That is more hideous than the Desert Eagle I ran across the other day in my local gun store.

That should be something Tiger Man carries.

Would you be so kind to direct me to whatever shop carries it? I have to have her.

Reminds me of this one I saw in, of all places, the Tower of London. They have a whole load of blinged-up guns that were legally required to be turned in when the UK banned handguns. I think this one was believed to have been owned by a drug dealer.

Well I don't know about jeweling, bedazzling, or flowering, but from the latest breaking in:
"Destiny has more weapons than all the Halo games put together - squared and then squared again."

So, what, like over 20 to the 4th power? That's 160k.
The only way one can possibly do that is either through randomized/swappable parts (like Borderlands/Army of Two [over a much grander scale, of course] does).

I like it.

Well, most guns in BL2 are just iterations of a theme. A level 1 Tediore SMG doesn't feel or function all that much different from a level 50 Tediore SMG.

That said, the special weapons are usually pretty dope, and maybe all the junky ones out there make them that much more special.

(Mmmmmmm. Sawbar. I'll be in my bunk.)

One thing I am happy about from what I've seen is it looks like the guns will LOOK a lot more unique in this game based on the models from the GDC presentation. Borderlands bothered me because the most common difference was a different color.

But 200k+ almost unique weapons sounds absolutely improbable.

Also, Slagga + Bee or GTFO.

Yeah that's definitely true, although it also depends on how many base guns there are plus how many "variations" for each gun there are for each. For one thing it appears all we've even seen are 8 of the human weapons, each with 2-4 variations. Obviously they are only showing us a sliver of both the base guns and the variations, so while I have trouble imagining 200k+ unique weapons, I can easily imagine a lot more original looking weapons than in Borderlands (no matter how much fun Borderlands is). Also just a small thought I just had, they have at least one guy devoted JUST to designing the look of guns from the last Breaking In article, so I imagine we're going to see a lot of unique guns.

Yeah, I agree.
If only the weapons had the variable mechanics of the grenades... I mean, they added to the grenade, instead of being just one or the other mechanic.

Well I don't know about jeweling, bedazzling, or flowering, but from the latest breaking in:
"Destiny has more weapons than all the Halo games put together - squared and then squared again."

-Magnum
-Assault Rifle
-Battle Rifle
-SMG
-DMR
-Sniper Rifle
-Rocket Launcher
-Spartan Laser
-Shotgun
-Grenade Launcher
-Plasma Pistol
-Plasma Rifle
-Needler
-Needle Rifle
-Carbine
-Fuel Rod Cannon
-Beam Rifle
-Gravity Hammer
-Mauler
-Brute Shot
-Plasma Sword
-Concussion Rifle
-Plasma Repeater

I tried to include all the unique weapons of Bungie's Halo games, however, not their many variants. This is all kinda off the top of my head, so berate me if I missed any. Just going off this list, the least amount of weapons we will get our hands on in Destiny is: (23^2)^2= 279,841

:)

Also, Rajeev's following comments:

"The utter lack of ego. You’d think with so many uber-successful Halo games under their belt that Bungie would be fueled by unbridled hubris, but this is a shockingly humble studio. Nothing is sacred, everything can be questioned, and everyone is always hungry to learn and improve their craft." AND "Bungie is exceptionally friendly to families. Daycare, babysitting, time off, etc. Making a game like Destiny takes a lot of time and energy. Knowing that your employer cares about your family’s well-being is a good thing."

Those kinds of comments just make me love Bungie even more.

If you want to count turrets:

-Machine gun turret
-Plasma Turret
-Gauss Cannon and/or Rocket Turret

That's (28^2)^2= 614,656

you forgot the Spiker and Focys Rifle, as well.

That hits 30 (counting turrets) which is 810,000.
