PSA: You don’t have to purchase a Treasures of the Lost from Tess - Eva gives one to you for free.

The Tower has some new Decorations (and music!) for Festival of the Lost!

Even the Cryptarch is getting in on the festivities!

And Eva has a quest for us:

Also, Tess has a couple of new dances and a new emote:

Zombie Dance (700s):

Monster Dance (500s):

Boo! (300s):

She also sells extras of the Treasures of the Lost that Eva gave us in case you want to try a different mask:

Anyway, that’s just a sampling. Definitely hop in this week if you can and check it out. :)

PSA: Important Information!

by Beorn @, <End of Failed Timeline>, Monday, October 26, 2015, 16:09 (3104 days ago) @ Beorn

  • Be sure to have several Consumable, Material, and Helmet inventory slots open before talking to Eva.
  • If you normally have your helmet off in public spaces (like I do), you’ll want to turn it on for the week. :)
  • It is not necessary to purchase anything from Tess to complete Eva’s quests (although you can collect items/masks faster that way).
  • Eris is a riot.
  • Rare (blue) masks expire at the end of the Festival, but Legendary (purple) ones apparently do not. You can upgrade a Rare to Legendary with the Glue material from Eva’s gift.
  • You have to wear a mask to collect candy for the “Empty Candy Satchel”

The Cathedral of Dusk was already found BEFORE microtransactions, your point is invalid! As far as the festival, with the amount of things in this event, it would be far fetched to say that this was not finished BEFORE microtransactions. I think what we are looking at here is Bungie doing a cool thing without the help of microtransactions. Good job Bungie! I'm am sure that the income will help somehow, but this event was more than likely finished before the income from microtransactions

While this event was likely "finished" before actual income from microtransactions was seen at Bungie, it's not a stretch to say that microtransactions were the planned method of ROI for it.

Like I said, it's just the beginning of a post-Microtransaction Destiny. Of course they didn't whip up a new map and event in a matter of days, but the ROI is definitely the Microtrans. I wish they would tell us how many Zombie Dances were sold on day 1. Sammy and I got $20 of Silver for them, and have already gotten our Money's worth.,,

However!

by TheeChaos @, Tuesday, October 27, 2015, 15:48 (3103 days ago) @ Mid7night

I agree and that probably was the point. I just like yanking Kornys chain sometimes. His initial post sounded like he was trying to say if it werent for microtransactions we would not have this. Potentially they could have made zero dollars off of microtransactions and we would have still received this gift. Either way its a nice thing.

I hope microtransactions can make things happen more often~!

I don't think that it does unless it counts as "Random Festival Candy". You get one from your first bag along with the guaranteed Legendary, but no on I've talked to has gotten any more. Eva's bags don't say glue is possible. Unless someone has proof otherwise it looks like you get two max for free.

I love every single thing about this festival.

I love how the tower looks right now, it's so beautiful with the candles everywhere and everything all purple. I am having fun with the candy bounties and all the masks on everyone and the monster dances.

I still want to see a giant group of guardians all synchronized to Thriller in the tower just dancing.

I love that Bungie decided to do something like this again, I can only hope we have a Christmas Week in the tower as well!!

I want to see snow falling and Christmas trees and garland everywhere, and more twinkly lights, and stockings and presents from the tower reps, and Cayde in a santa suit and Shax in reindeer antlers.

Hoping that there are more surprises on the way soon.

I think I've found a way to abuse the matchmaking sustem for the Tower. I've found if I go in with someone (as Fireteam Leader), leave them there then come back on my own, I'll often come straight back into the same instance, but in a separate Fireteam.

We'd only need it to work twice to get a full 16 in the Tower. Honestly, the hardest part would be synchronising across 2 party chats.

Would it working taking a partial fire team in, leaving the fireteam while everyone is still in the tower so your team is open, and then having another partial team join you there, so on and so forth?

I'm thinking you take one person in, then leave them there. Then you take another in, and if it's the right tower, you leave them there too. Then you go in by yourself until you end up in the same tower again.

At that point you've got three people all in the same instance but separate fireteams. Have each invite 5 friends and fill the Tower with DBO.

Does the tower have a fireteam chat channel?

alternatively, you could have one person start the dance, let it run through an entire cycle, then other people start the dance on the next cycle.

Unless you are wanting a vid of everyone starting at the same time, you could just keep restarting your dance until you are in sync.

by someotherguy, Hertfordshire, England, Tuesday, October 27, 2015, 12:00 (3104 days ago) @ Beorn

I'm really having fun with this silly Festival. I barely played last night but I got some funny masks and I'm gonna try (RNG-willing) to grind enough glue to keep all of them. I'm even tempted to be a hypocrit and buy the Thriller emote. I really love Halloween (moreso than any other holiday) and this is just wonderful, silly fun.

There's just one problem I'm having - The Skull Mask. According to reddit, there's no rare version of this mask. That means you can only get it from Legendary packages. Which cost silver.

Now, fair's fair, it's only a cosmetic item. It stands to reason that you could use Silver to buy a purely cosmetic item during an event. I can't argue with that.

The problem is that it's random. Which means you could buy dozens of packages with your silver and still not get it. Already on reddit there's people who've spent upwards of $30 and not received it. In theory you could buy hundreds of dollars of silver and not get it.

Obviously the event isn't over yet, and maybe there's a way to get it from a mission or time-gated quest. But if not... not cool Bungie. Very, very not cool.

The problem is paying for a chance at cosmetic items. Welcome to the casino.

I feel like if someone spends their money on that, it serves them right. I still fully agree with you that if someone wants to blow their cash on a hat that doesn't exist, then sure, whatever. But to pay for the potential chance to maybe sorta RNG your way to it? Well that's just stupid and consumer-hostile on Bungie's part, and just as stupid if someone pays for the attempt. In my opinion.

I can't tell what's worse, spending money on Bungie's microtransactions, or Halo 5. I can't wait for Fallout 4 for a nice change of pace. :D

To an extent I get meh, as you can choose not to let it affect you.

But for those people who do buy into it, they're absolutely being suckered. I know some people would say "let the idiots pay", but it's still taking advantage of idiots. I'm sure I'll enjoy my free content they've paid for, but it doesn't sit well. This is exactly the kind of thing I was worried about.

As slycrel said - Microtransactions are bad for collectors and while those kinds of people have bigger problems than a skull hat, this is taking advantage of exactly that kind of person. RNG cosmetics are fine. Paid cosmetics as a shortcut are fine. Paid cosmetics as exclusives are fine. But when you get to paid RNG you start turning your skinner box into a slot machine.

Of course, there may be another way to get it and people spending silly money are quite possibly just impatient. We'll have to wait and see. Until then I'm going to run around in this Speaker mask being unhelpful.

I can't disagree with that. If it's true, that is pretty shitty. Paying for Destiny's notoriously awful RNG is just cruel.

What evidence does reddit have to support the skull only dropping from the packages, though? Not being snarky, just genuinely asking.

I can't even find the thread now, though there is another similar one on the second page. If nothing else no one has disproven it, though that's hardly the same as proof.

Being reddit, a pinch of salt may be required (and you can probably find some in there).

From everything I've seen, you can get legendary masks from the very first bag Eva gives you. The people who got the skull for free got then there. Other than that it's been rare masks from the bags.

If you look at Bungie's news post, they say you can collect all 16 masks, but only show 15. The two missing are the Traveler (which I have from a bag) and the skull.

I've seen multiple posts on Reddit of people spending $20 or more and not getting it. I guess Luke was right about people throwing money at their screens. I would love to have the skull, but there's no way I'm spending real money on it.

Spending real money for the CHANCE to get it. Definitely a big no thanks.

Also, people can rage all they want about microtransactions, but the numbers speak for themselves (and I would love to see actual figures!). I bet Bungie is raking in the money from this. As long as people spend like that, it's not going to go away.

For the record, I'm not trying to start that debate again at all, but I just think it's interesting.

I get where you're coming from. Maybe I'm naive, but I don't really see it as intentional that one mask would only be available from buying packs that have a chance to give you one.

For one, seriously, that's a ridiculous thing to spend money on. And I guess I am naive because it appears many people are doing so, but that's the dumbest thing I've heard. I could see spending a buck or two, if it was just that skull for sale, but there's no way I'm spending money for a dice roll for getting one. People that do that blow my mind.

What do I know, though? Maybe it is entirely intentional and devious, and people spending twenty or thirty bucks to get the stupid thing is exactly what they wanted. I was just sort of hoping it was some sort of misstep or accident and that it should be obtainable the same way all other masks are.

I don't know that it's devious but it must be intentional

by someotherguy, Hertfordshire, England, Tuesday, October 27, 2015, 16:15 (3103 days ago) @ cheapLEY

The people behind this aren't stupid. They have to realise that this rare, two-week-only item is only available through RNG. Whether or not they're going Whale hunting is another matter, but they have to be aware of the possibility that they could do well from them.

Bungie pulled off what Microsoft was slammed for

by Schedonnardus, Texas, Tuesday, October 27, 2015, 15:23 (3103 days ago) @ cheapLEY

Microsoft creates Microsoft Points. Sells them in bundles. Sells items at just the right amount that you'll always have lingering points left over, so you end up buying more. Online community and journalists rail against the great big capitalistic satan. MS caves, switches to real currency.

Bungie creates silver, even gives you a little for free. Sells them in bundles of 500, 1000, 2000. Sells at odd numbers (700, 500, 300) so that you have some left over. Community rejoices, because.....THRILLER!!

by cheapLEY @, Tuesday, October 27, 2015, 16:12 (3103 days ago) @ Schedonnardus

But I think most people's biggest problem was the conversion rate. $1.00 got you 80 points, so the math was always a bit difficult for some folks. And the stuff they sold was always multiples of like 50, right? I can't remember. But you're right in that you would have a few points left over if that was the case.

At least $1.00 equals 100 silver, so the math lines up. Also, you get 1100 Silver if you spend 10 bucks and 2300 Silver if you spend 20 bucks, so you could potentially spend it all and have none left over.

I'm hoping we see more stuff like this though, so I'll always have use for a bit of Silver.

It's ridiculous how some have responded to this, though. $20 was just over the top expensive and a rip off for The Dark Below or House of Wolves, apparently, but throw out some seven dollar emotes and people shit themselves and can't spend money fast enough . . .

I'm sure having an excess so you want to get a little more to buy something was part of the reason it was like that, but the stated reason, which I think was at least a big factor, was so they could have a unified currency across all their markets and adjust the real money price for different currencies and for inflation.

True, but knowing that the others are all obtainable in-game, that means the only one actually worth paying for is the Skull.

Even if you wanted to use the packages as a shortcut, say If you really wanted Xur, that would only slightly increase the payout chance. Honestly the only way for the packages to be a good deal is if you don't care what you get, or if you're just after the glue.

Edit: which is of course totally possible, if you just want to wear a fun mask. But this conversation isn't really about those players.

The N7 Shadow was definitely in my top 5 favorite. Sorry you couldn't get her.

The skull is entirely cosmetic, though. Zero reason to spend so much for looks, but if they want to, they can't very well blame Bungie for it, especially if it might be possible to get it another way.

In fact, the masks have a negative effect. They have a Light Value of 0, which can drop your light level by ~30 when you wear them, so they're definitely not something you'd wear all the time.

You can definitely blame Bungie for the method of obtaining it though.

I know Bungie can do no wrong, but you can't look at a random, paid reward package tied to a limited edition collectible in a game that just recently added collectible cosmetics and is currently running an entire event based on them and think "looks fine to me".

And don't tell me "they know its random when they buy it". Advertising a bad product doesn't make the product any better, it just makes the people who buy it idiots. Yes, the people are stupid for buying it, but it's Bungie who've set it up this way to take money from idiots (intentionally or otherwise).

[Im starting to sound like the fun police now. I dont think Bungie is necessarily being exploitative, but the sales model itself is, whether they wanted it to be or not]
