Idea for a tiny little tweak to Public Events (Destiny)
by CruelLEGACEY , Toronto, Wednesday, February 17, 2016, 20:36 (3286 days ago)
A thought occurred to me while searching Venus for Public Events with Vortech last night:
You know how Ghost chimes in with some kind of verbal callout any time a public event starts, followed by a waypoint on our HUD? Well what if something similar happened any time Public Events started anywhere on the planet. So if you're cruising around the Forgotten Shores and an event starts over at the Mothyards, Ghost could say something like "getting some strange readings coming from the mothyards... might want to check it out", and then a waypoint with a timer could appear on screen.
I think this would help in a couple ways:
1) It would help draw players from all corners of each patrol space to any public event, meaning we might see larger groups of guardians participating in each event.
2) It would make it way easier to track down events when you're searching for them.
Thoughts?

That's not a little tweak.

The networking model of Destiny's planetary areas is such that the only thing linking the zones together is the physical geometry on your local machine. You can leave an area, and come back 20 seconds later to a completely different instance.
Public events timers are tied to how long an area instance has been "live".
There was a GDC talk on this whole thing a while back.

Forward-faceing "little tweak", back-end "overhaul" ;)

Yeah from the little I know about Destiny's network model, I figured it would be impossible to implement now. I was thinking more about what we might see in Destiny 2, if the engine allows larger patrol areas to be loaded without needing things to be instanced. Just wondering if people like the idea, not so much about how possible it is :)

I kinda want Patrol to completely unrecognizable.

Patrol as it stands is pretty lame. It's sort of a sandbox mode with some half-hearted experimental Journey-inspired matchmaking thrown in.
This is why I'm much much more interested in Destiny 2 (hereafter which may only be referred to as "Des2ny") then any upcoming content expansions. It'll give Bungie the abilty to completely tear down and revamp (or excise completely) systems and features which are flawed, but so intertwined with other systems that they can't be easily changed in Destiny 1 without breaking things.

Nah, should follow Fast and Furious naming, so it should be called 2Destiny. Followed by Destiny: Sparrow Drift.

But Bungie would have to stop at 7, and F&F is going till at LEAST nine…
Bungie names every release after Desiny7 as... 2Destiny7, and then Destiny7: Pike-e-o Drift, etc etc.

I always love to point out that I said that same thing during the Alpha :-p I think the Taken King made major steps towards patrol being better, with all the stuff you can find on the dreadnaut, but I agree it can be made even better in Des2ny.

"Des-two-knee". Ahaha brilliant.

I have a feeling that unless it's a clean break and a totally new game, their hands will be tied. I personally hope everything is new. No weapons carry over. No items. No activities. Just your guardians.

Why does it mean for my guardian to transfer if none of the gear does? Subclasses?

I would say nothing but your character's appearance? I think it'd be more fun if we get new subclasses with new abilities instead of keeping the old ones.
We can go with five subclasses: Earth, fire, wind, water, and heart…

I want the whole game to be Patrol
by Kahzgul, Wednesday, February 17, 2016, 23:00 (3285 days ago) @ CyberKN
I'd love to get rid of mission selection in the navigator and have patrol beacons start missions, or have strikes just always be there and when you walk into that part of the map, you're in a strike now. Something like:
From orbit
--> Choose planet (or moon or whatever) as your patrol zone. You get a map that shows you where you can land (basically any non-darkness zone, or maybe any exterior non-darkness zone) and you point and click to land there.
--> Then you appear and it's patrol mode. Maybe Zevala chimes in with "we've got some active missions available if you're interested, guardian. Your ghost has details." Pull up the ghost and he'll give you nav coordinates to the area of the missions and strikes (which creates a private fireteam-only instance of that area for you while the mission is active), but you're not married to those.
--> If you decide to head that way, bam, missions and strikes start. Decide to bail on them and you're back in patrol mode. Finish the mission or strike and instead of being bumped to orbit... you're right back in patrol mode. All seamless.

I hate when people replace what should be a fairly efficient menu system with some sort of enormous three-dimensional space. It completely ruins the burnout franchise for me. I want to run a race. So now I have to drive for 15 minutes to get to a specific spot in a fake world so that I can run that race? I just don't like it in any game it has been used in.

I want the seamless matchmaking of Patrol to be taken a step farther, so that you can follow people into Strikes, etc. (or have some option to join) instead of watching them disappear in the loading hallways.

What do you do when you get to a darkness zone? There can be what, 12 people in a given space? Strikes would be very easy indeed if you could have twelve people on the boss.

I mean, ideally the game could scale enemy health and spawn frequency depending on player count, but I have no illusions that Bungie would actually attempt to tackle this specific case.

I would want darkness zones to be limited to fireteam or raid sizes, so entering one would match you to the fireteam of the guy you just followed, unless his fireteam was already full, in which case you'd get a message to that effect (Cayde saying "Sorry guardian, that soldier is in a fireteam on a special mission. I've got one for you, too, if you want it, but you can't go with him right now.").

Add your own modifiers.
Going to Earth(or even better, the Moon) with all burns, Catapult, Brawler, Airborne, Small Arms and Specialist?
So broken. And I'd LOVE it.

I'm not so sure...

Although the moment-to-moment networking of the bubbles is separate, I don't see why the server-side host managing public stuff in your instance can't be forced public events based on a global "such-and-such event will happen in X area at X time" thing, where all bubbles of that area will experience the event at that time.
Actually, that public event trackers have been vaguely functional suggests they're already (loosely) doing this.
It might be tricky to ensure things worked out if you arrived to an area after the event started, and it couldn't drop your fireteam into a bubble with the event already live... but then, cruellegacy did suggest using a timer.
![Avatar](images/avatars/13750.jpg)
I don't think this is entirely true.
by BeardFade , Portland, OR, Wednesday, February 17, 2016, 23:51 (3285 days ago) @ CyberKN
You are correct that the network code provides different instances with each zone. I read that article as well (it was fascinating). However, an app like Destiny Events would not work at all unless events were in all instances at the same time. So, this theoretically could still tell you that an event is about to occur or is occurring in another zone, but could not specify which exact event is taking place.

The success of the public events timer makes me think it could be done. Especially if you could signal an intent to join before crossing bubbles. Sort of like how you can see firetEam members moving around other bubbles.
