I wasn't playing the original version of the first Marathon, so I've never actually played the ridiculous original form of that puzzle.Nonetheless, I'd file that under sloppy level design. There are ways that they could have done the same basic puzzle type much better.
What do you mean? It's the same in all three version revisions of the game.
