There are few experiences in gaming that are more satisfying to me personally than completing a no-kill, Ghost (never even detected by enemies) run.

Every MGS game but the first both allows, and offers rewards for this.

I've never played a MGS game, but I really don't know why I haven't... Maybe I need to get around to it sometime soon. Any recommendations on where to start? Games to skip or make sure not to skip? Important to play them in any certain order?

Play them in order of release, because they are very story heavy. The only special instructions I have are this:

When the credits begin to roll in MGS4, turn off the game immediately. Don't watch the post credit sequence.
