Weird, but neat tip.
One thing just occurred to me:
Destiny logs you out for "inactivity" if you put the console to sleep while playing. This throws up a screen that requires the user to press X to acknowledge that they were disconnected. I wonder if the presence of a screen which requires user input prevents the console from quitting the game for background updates?
If that's the case, I can pretty easily test it by manually quitting the game before putting my console to sleep and seeing if that solves the issue.
