Earth Symbols in Opening Cutscene, the nine? (Destiny)

I decided to try my hand at getting clearer versions of the symbols/structure of the planets in the opening cutscene of D1. Here is the image of Earth I'm referring to:

Anyhow, has there been any speculation as to the meaning of the symbols that appear here? There are 10 of them and 2 of them appear in one segment. Eh. I just thought it looked cool...

My 1st thought is "the nine" as those 10 symbols are divided into nine... sections.
