Can you provide any examples where this has happened before? Every other game that relies on servers dies when the servers are shut off.

WOW Classic which Bungie is bringing back due to the amount of people who wanted to play on community legacy servers. Though it's still going to be proprietary and they plan to shut down the servers eventually where there is no longer enough interest to keep them running.
