How is Forge matchmaking this broken? (Destiny)

I’ve been having problems but with the volundr forge, the first one, the only one I’ve unlocked so far. When I go to start it up I initially load in just by myself and I have to fight for a while until it times out or something and ends the attempt and goes back into matchmaking again. Granted I’ve done very little forge right now as I seem to get curbed stomped in all but a few attempts, it’s more enjoyable to do other things and no one ever invites me to join in with them.
