The point wasn't about simply customizing stuff, but spending currency that can be spent in game-changing stuff (supposedly) to customize stuff.

I think his comment still applies. People like cosmetic pieces and flair; sometimes the coolness of a piece of armor is enough that it's more likely to be worn than less appealing piece with better stats.
