Starting area locked out? (Destiny)

Is the area where you first start accessible? I read that someone found it in the Alpha but when I tried to go back there was a locked gate where you picked up the first gun.

Just, uh, thinking out loud, but I wonder if you could use something from Halo tricking to get through the gate. You know, the old school Ghost slide or Forklift dismount, but using a Sparrow.

Might work, unless there is a second barrier or the starting area doesn't load for some reason.
