Pikes? Where are the Pikes? (Destiny)

Do they only show up in story missions? I've been patrolling the moon and completely forgot about them.

I've only ever encountered them on the story mission The Dark Beyond and once every so often on Moon Patrol abandoned by a player. Wherever people are finding Pikes in Patrol at the Cosmodrome and on the Moon is totally beyond me.
