I personally have very little experience experimenting with other methods to deal with the boomers. I've been in groups that have tried a few different locations for bubble placements, but they all pretty much result in the same outcome: a dead defender (poor Vortech ;p).

A few times I have run the raid with others, they drop a bubble over the little glowing circle where Crota runs to when he goes to the sides. The boomers will fire on that, and so long as the sword carrier remains out of sight, will never be fired upon.
