And might I suggest picking up a void MG? In the absence of The Swarm, you'll have to settle for something less similar to a laser beam projector, but even a green one will do what you need it to in the crucible.

I earned my thorn on a hunter, and my secret was a void fusion rifle. Nowadays I'd probably go shotgun, but back then - in the before times - the fusion rifle was my savior. That and hiding. Lots of hiding.
