I've been away for 5 months, whats going on? Where do I star (Destiny)

Hey DBO! I need advice!

I last played in the middle of December before I moved continents and had to build up the whole AV/internet infrastructure again and I have no idea whats going on. I never got anywhere in the new raid. The patch notes baffle me. The game baffles me. It still feels great but I have no idea where I should be spending my resources or time.

When the HoW drops next week, any Legendary gear/weapon will be able to be Ascended to Raid-tier, so find what you like and level that.

Should I be leveling and upgrading my release level legendary and exotic weapons and armour? Should I be leveling and upgrading my expansion 1 equivalents? Should I ignore both pending new expansion? Melt them down? Upgrade them somehow? Damn they take a long time to level so I'd hate to be wasting it. Should I be farming rep with the goth girl? Is level 3 rep with the normal factions enough still?

See above comment. Anything Legendary will be viable when the next DLC comes out on Monday, it'll just take a bit to earn the resources to level it up.

Are strange coins still important? What about rep and marks?

Reps and Marks will get you new faction gear, a lot of it looks to be very good.
Strange Coins will be useful for Heavy Synths, though Xur will be selling new exotics.

I really don't know where to spend my time. I used to just farm bounties, do the dailies and weeklies and jump in a raid or nightfall when someone on my list needed a +1. Seemed to work ok and was hella fun. Now I feel a bit lost.

It's looking like more and more things have become viable reward sources, so just do what you enjoy doing. :)

I thought I had most of what I wanted out of VoG, but all that stuff is 300 DMG/level 30. Do I need to farm it again to upgrade this stuff or is it all obsolete for PvE now?

It's never been "obsolete", but with the new DLC, you'll be able to bump it to 365 DMG.
