(If you're interested, here's Tails from the Lighthouse Part 1 and Part 2)

Had another great night in the Trials of Osiris last night. Went in with TheeChaos and Ottermack. We had all played with each other before, but never all together on the same team. Turns out we're a pretty good match together. After 4 or 5 warm up games, we started new cards and went to the lighthouse twice, back-to-back. All 3 of us tend to be naturally aggressive players, which lead to some fun moments. Also worth mentioning: none of us used a single Hand Cannon all night. Game after game, enemy Thorns and Last Words fell to our trio of Pulse Rifles. Ottermack is a machine with his Praedyth's Timepiece, TheeChaos was going great with his Messenger, and I switched back and forth between my Messenger and a SpareChange.25 with Rodeo, Smallbore, and Headseaker (It will 2-shot kill just as easily as the Messenger, and has more range). The exotic hand cannons are as deadly as ever, but I can safely say they have met their match!

A few highlights:

Unstoppable Chaos

During one of our first games, TheeChaos went on a tear right out of the gate and never slowed down. I'm convinced Ottermack and I were doing almost as much total damage, but Chaos managed to score the kill almost every. single. time. It was a thing of beauty :)

Same Team?

In this clip, Ottermack and I both prove that when we're on a roll, we'll gun down anything in our path... even each other ;p

When to Push

Like me, Ottermack and TheeChaos are naturally aggressive players. Unlike me, they both have great instincts when it comes to knowing when to act aggressively, and when to use restraint. One moment (which you can see in the Waiting Game clip below) would become known as Chaos' "pee into the wind" maneuver. With Ottermack and I both down next to each other, and the entire enemy team camping our Orbs, Chaos just walks into the room, pops his super, and bladedances all 3 of them into oblivion. I though it was the worst idea possible, and it worked beautifully :)

This clip below is a continuation of the Same Team? clip above. It is a great example of moving as a team to pressure the enemy and keep them off balance. At the end, you'll see a fantastic example of when not to push, as I manage to trick the entire enemy team into chasing me so that I can loop around and revive both of my fallen teammates.

The Waiting Game

This final clip is a long one, but it was my favorite win of the night. Playing on Burning Shrine, we squared off against a team who had a rock-solid game plan, and they executed it beautifully. They were spawning on the outside, so they had 1 sniper stay far back while the other 2 watched the exits from the building. Any time we made a push for one of the exits, the sniper would rotate over and work with his teammates to pick us off as we struggled to find them while shooting into the sunlight.
We quickly lost 2 rounds before we switched up our approach. We all agreed that this was not a time for aggression, so we hung back inside and waited. By staying back inside the building, we took their sniper largely out of the equation. We clawed our way back to a 4-3 lead.
Then, during the final round, I saw an opportunity to push and we jumped on it. Chaos had an enemy pinned on top of the central outdoor structure (above the outside heavy ammo spawn). I got a sniff of blood in the water and rushed outside through the middle doorway, around the side of the structure, and Nova Bombed the guy camping on top. Off balance, down a man, and 1 round away from defeat, the enemy team panicked and got sloppy. We found the last guy hiding in the corner, too scared to move :)

Anyone else have any highlights from Trials of Osiris this weekend? What do you all think about the rotating maps? How did it change ToO for you?

Seriously. I'm really really shocked with not only the ease you guys are able to make it to the lighthouse, but (and what is even more impressive) is how you are able to dissect a combat situation, and play it out rather smoothly, calmly, methodically. My guns skills are pretty decent, my tactical play is good, but the ability to control myself and apply these skills under pressure is what makes you guys top notch.

When the shit hits the fan this is how I handle it. Brute Force!

I also think that having either good natural team cohesion/communication is #1, or (for me) having a team leader who dictates where we go, when to push, and who forges the path is the most important aspect of consistent play. I remember the second week playing with Squid and Xenos on Pantheon. Squid (if i remember correctly) would often give out commands that were very helpful. If I tried to push up to far he'd call me back. I'm not a general on the field, I'm a medic. A cleanup man. I guard the orbs of fallen combatants while my leaders push the enemy to the brink.

Playing with Banana and Mac yesterday, we all showed moments of brilliance. Each of us took turns being the better player. But it was apparent that three lone wolves were just not enough. But then we went to play normal control and DESTROYED. :)

TL;DR You PS4 dudes are badass, and I'm a lone wolf hungry for 6v6 games.

That really is an important part of winning in Trials (or any PvP, for that matter). It doesn't come naturally to me at all... I've been learning a lot from my teammates over the past couple months. That's one of the reasons I enjoy doing these recap posts so much; I like to go back and take another look at how we reacted to various situations. How can we improve? What could I have done different or better?

SO MUCH PUNCHING!!! This is awesome :D

Yes, having a "point man" can help a lot. Chaos, Ottermack and I fell in to an unusually natural rhythm together. We'd each call out enemy movements and positions as we saw them, and as soon as any one of us sensed an opportunity they would call it out and we'd all break into action. We've played these maps enough at this point to have a decent idea of how to rotate and flank based on our relative positioning. We didn't need to waste too many words spelling stuff like that out, which saves a lot of time and energy.

Playing with Banana and Mac yesterday, we all showed moments of brilliance. Each of us took turns being the better player.

That was us last night, too. I'd say I'm the weakest of the 3 of us, but not by a wide margin. Each of us are capable of going off for a huge game at any time. It takes a lot of the pressure off; when Ottermack had a couple weaker games, Chaos or I were able to step up and take the lead. I was way too tired by the end of the night, and ended with a couple not-so-great performances. But Ottermack and Chaos were more than able to pick up my slack and keep the win streak going.

But it was apparent that three lone wolves were just not enough. But then we went to play normal control and DESTROYED. :)

I just came off an hour or so of playing Skirmish and WRECKING the whole time :D

I don't know if it's a highlight, but...

by someotherguy, Hertfordshire, England, Sunday, July 26, 2015, 13:41 (3646 days ago) @ CruelLEGACEY

Speedracer and I had an unexpected game. Ottermack got disconnected as we landed, so we fully anticipated things to end horribly.

In the end we won 5-0 despite being down a man, with a combined total of 19 kills and 1 death. I was so close to a Mark of the Unbroken I felt genuinely bad for the guys we went up against.

Other than that, we had a solid run at the Lighthouse. We were lucky enough to get Black Shield maybe 3 times, which happens to be both mine and Speedracer's favourite map, and I could see why - he's a scary sniper.

We had a couple of very close rounds including two in a row that ended in a 1v3. The first time, all Ottermack and I could do was watch helplessly as Speedracer Hawkmooned 2 guys while the third wandered aimlessly into a Lightning Grenade Otter had left him as a present. The very next round saw Ottermack Shotgun 3 guys in 5 seconds as the last man standing.

My personal favourite moment was purely accidental. I was last man standing, freshly out of Shotgun ammo when their final guy popped around the corner. He threw a magnetic grenade at me but missed, and I lunged at him with my Melee in the desperate hope I could punch him out before he shotgunned me. I hit him once, and he was dead. Whaaaat?! I couldn't figure out what had happened, until the other guys told me his grenade hadn't missed. He'd stuck me, my melee had given me a Flame shield, which saved me from the detonation. Of course, as I was stood right next to him when it went off he wasn't so lucky. Oops.

Ottermack told us about that... I wish I could have seen it! Great job.

I've seen him do that many times... it always amazes me. Last night I told him "remind me never to piss you off" :)

That sounds hilarious! Did you save a clip?

I forgot to save the clip :(

I did save the 2v3 game, but honestly I don't know what do with it. The guys we were up against were clearly not great - I just checked their stats and 2 of them have never even won a game of ToO - and it feels unfair to post a video of "Hey look at these chumps", even if I think we played well against them.

Are you sure you didn't play against Red, banana and I? Cause we totally lost to a two man team... in our defense though, one of their guys was a fricking BEAST with the last word.

That fella has some serious skill. I looked him up; dtracker says he has a 1.94 k/d and nearly 70% win rate...in Trials.

This is the gameplay from my "unstoppable" match, was just really lucky.

Another highlight for me was this occurence.

I laughed pretty hard at that.

Good runs and good people. Time for to prep for the Iron Banner.

I'm still giggling about that one :)

Side note: How are you getting our party chat to come through the recording? Are you using a capture card, or is there a setting somewhere in the PS4 to allow party chat to be recorded by the DVR?

There is a setting in PS4 share settings to record voice. You can also elect to record party members voices(which i turned on after last night).

That was a fun game. I really enjoyed that. Especially that 2nd round (4:15ish) where I popped open the lower door & did some damage. :)
