Year 1 Highlights: What are your favorite memories from DY1? (Destiny)

by CruelLEGACEY @, Toronto, Friday, September 04, 2015, 13:43 (3465 days ago)

In the midst of all the excitement over The Taken King, I thought it would be fun to take a look back at our first year with Destiny and pick our favorite or most memorable moments. I'll kick things off:

The Alpha/Beta

Playing Destiny for the firs time was a revelation for me. Bungie seemed to be having difficulty talking about the game in the months before launch, and the footage I'd seen didn't have me buzzing with anticipation. But that all changed when I jumped into the Alpha for the first time and got to see and feel the game for myself. I spent hours just walking and driving around Old Russia, exploring every corner, tunnel, and cave. Even after launch, the joy of exploration would end up carrying me through the early game. If you had asked me a year ago, I would have said that exploration was the reason I played Destiny; the combat was fine, but little more than something do to while I traveled around new worlds.

Then I hit 26 and raided for the first time, and everything changed ;)

VoG with DBO

I've been a lurker at HBO and DBO for years, but had never posted on a regular basis until late september/early october of last year. That's when I decided I wanted to try the raid for the first time, so I came here looking for a fireteam.
I was a bit nervous when I first posted. I didn't have great gear, and more importantly I couldn't use my mic while playing at night. So I needed a group who would be patient in explaining things to me, and tolerant of me screwing up because I had no way to ask questions or call for help. Things couldn't have gone better. The Vault of Glass was the first time Destiny's combat mechanics really jumped into the foreground for me. The sense of teamwork and coordination on top of the mystery and wonder of the setting... it was incredible. Best of all, Cody, Cyber, Speedracer, Korny, and Kalamari were super helpful and a blast to play with. I was hooked. Since then, meeting and playing with people from DBO has been my favorite thing about this game. I feel very fortunate to have such a fantastic group of friends to hang out with every night. Plus I get to do it while sitting on the couch in my underwear! You're welcome for that mental picture, by the way ;)

Flawless Raider

For most of the month of October, the DBO PS4 Raiders banged our heads against the Vault of Glass with the hopes of earning the Flawless Raider trophy. 3 or 4 nights per week, we'd group up and run the raid for a few hours. While it didn't seem possible at first, progress was made. Each time through we'd do a little better. Our nerves were tested. The Gorgons' cave became a struggle to hold on to sweat-covered controllers. The jumping puzzle was renamed "the widowmaker". On several occasions we got so close it physically hurt.

And then one day Cyber, Cody, Speedracer, Korny and I partied up. We couldn't find a 6th person to join us, so we figured we'd just do a couple practice runs.

Bam, said the lady!

Since that glorious moment, I've been lucky enough to participate in 2 more successful Flawless Raider runs. Each time it has been a thrilling and exhilarating experience. If you haven't given it a shot yet, I highly recommend it. There's nothing else quite like it in Destiny. Well, almost nothing...

The Lighthouse

With the lack of a new raid in House of Wolves, I was worried I might burn out on Destiny. Prison of Elders didn't click with me, while strike playlists and standard crucible just aren't enough to keep me hooked. Then I played Trials of Osiris. Ooooooooh baby!
So intense, and so satisfying. Coming out of the Trials with a flawless ticket is an amazing feeling, and getting to see the lighthouse is the perfect reward.

So that's my list. How about everyone else?

Truth is, I don't think I realized how big a deal that was at the time. It's been fun all the people who assume I work for Bungie because of the "Sign of Opposing Will" I got from it :)

I learned a fantastic new expletive from him.

Second place: Blackstar casually mentioned a cat that hiccuped and farted at the same time on Dexter when screwing around in patrol. I looked at the video and laughed so hard I threw up and cried.

These were kind of incidental to Destiny. The only one directly related to Destiny was getting to The Lighthouse my 4th time when I absolutely didn't expect it since we were doing awful, or possibly Bluerunner getting his Fatebringer.

Best boss fight in the game.

Maybe getting to the lighthouse on my first try? But I had almost nothing to do with that, pure carry by Unoudid and Funkmon.

Or this

Still not sure why that worked.

  • Korny helped me with the first edition Queen's Wrath when I only had blues.
  • Bigarm and I Running our first Crota raid
  • All the raids with the deeply flawed raiders
  • Staying up really late over Thanksgiving break and playing crucible until I ranked up on my 360 character (He looked like Conan OBrien. Farewell, guardian!)
  • Draksis Queen's Wrath mission
  • Nightfalls... All the nightfalls.
  • When you still had to farm materials, I went to Anchor of Light on the moon and this random guardian was there too, we spent almost 45 minutes zooming around, finding chests, finding helium, waving and dancing to each other to let each other know we found something. Completely cooperatively but with no verbal communication. At the time materials were precious and I gathered more in that session than I had for weeks before hand.
  • I really like public events
  • Getting 10 bounties I could fulfill by going to the Rocketyard after TDB but before HoW--I loved fighting the blades of crota, taking the sword and smashing every single enemy in that area.

The drop-in matchmaking of Destiny provided me a cooperative play experience with a completely random player, different than anything I had ever experienced in any other game. It was really fun!

It was definitely not meant to glorify the old method of material farming.

There was something nice and peaceful about saying "I'm just going to cruise around Mars searching for relic iron, do a couple bounties, maybe catch a public event." Not that I'd ever want to go back to the old system.

In the midst of all the excitement over The Taken King, I thought it would be fun to take a look back at our first year with Destiny and pick our favorite or most memorable moments:

1. The first time that I used the Nova Bomb during the Alpha, I knew that I was a Warlock 4 Lyfe:

2. The first time that I outwitted a Bladedancer.

3. Our Flawless Raider practice nights that culminated in a tense, buggy showdown with Atheon.

4. Running the Crota Raid blindly, figuring out each step as we went, starting with an epic run through the darkness (dat final stand on the plate before we learned about the cheese rocks).

5. Using the pre-weapon-tuning Hawkmoon, and getting stuff like this 16.0 K/D. Also, can't find the video for it, but acquiring the Hawkmoon by dropping into Cody's Nightfall in the last seconds was memorable, as was his reaction. :P

6. Successfully killing Crota on Hard after hours and hours of trying (with a prototype strategy that would soon become the standard).

7. The Comeback.
Us: 15,920
Them: 19,025
FORTH EORLINGAS!

8. Our very first match in Trials :P

9. Dropping Skolas in one minute after bashing our heads against the wall for hours.

10. Pulling off an epic play, only to get shut down by Shaxx...

My first time running the sword

by someotherguy, Hertfordshire, England, Friday, September 04, 2015, 16:31 (3465 days ago) @ CruelLEGACEY

Things were not going to plan. It was the first few weeks after Crota first reared his ugly head, and my fireteam had been sent down into the pit to deal with him. We'd passed the Lanterns, suffering a few casualties along the way but confident nonetheless. The bridge was ahead of us. A vast expanse of nothing guarded by an Ancient order of Knights. Trivial. Ir Yut was put to rest before she could utter a word. Despite our earlier losses, we were confident as we summoned him.

Our Swordsman was a veteran. His timing impeccable, he swung his stolen sword into Crota's hide once, twice, three times, four. And again. And again. Ogres slain, Crota was done for. Two more swings would sever his connection to this underworld plane and banish him for all eternity.

And then tradgedy struck.

Wedged between a wall of Thrall and one of Crota's generals, our swordsman knew his end was nigh. His rifle empty, he primed a grenade and ensured he took his foe with him. We quickly dispatched the Oversoul, but we knew - without our Swordsman we would surely fail in our mission.

"Someone grab the bloody sword", came a disembodied cry. Our fearless leader, still supporting us from beyond the veil.

I was already there, delusions of grandeur filling my head. Maybe I would save the day. But Crota had already started to move, shooting across from the right to end our existence.

"Tell me when", I called as Machine Gun fire chattered into life around me.

"Tell me when. Tell me when"

Our timing was off. Crota was already kneeling when the signal came.

Five voices cried in unison - "Go!"

I leapt across the gap, but in my panic had come up short. I swung the sword with all my might, and the momentum closed the distance. In a flash I was upon him. Vengeance for my friends who had died in the pit. Vengeance for the Guardians who failed to stop him on the moon. Vengeance for Eris and her fireteam. Vengeance for our Swordsman.

With a rumble, Crota was gone. I had done the impossible. I had slain a god.

Nice :)

Bluerunner shoulder charging the rando off of A on Shores of Time. The video is around the forum somewhere. I was in that game nearby A at the time if I recall correctly.

Playing a Coop Night Nightfall with Kermit and Stabbim and being shocked by Kermit's immediate death at the first doorway. I got a good chuckle out of that one.

Killing bladedancers, titan strikers, bubble bros, gunslingers and sunsingers:)

And those few moments in Trials where I prove that I can really play.

The game just wouldn't be the same without you guys though. Most of my best experiences included DBOers and Destiny just wouldn't be as good of a game without y'all.

Oh and watching Beorn, Korny, and DPW roll to the lighthouse on Twitch.

The first time through the Abyss in Crota's End, totally unspoiled. It took us 3 days of 2-4 hours per night. The final run we got the whole fireteam past the lake to the bone hill. One died on the way up. 5 of us Took it to the top, where another fell into a pit. We got the bridge, but one was too slow and - though the 3 remaining members lay waste to as many thrall as we could, he simply wasn't fast enough. The ogre took 1 more. and so I and another guardian turned to run across the bridge, realizing, too late, that we would never make it. I told him to press on and stopped. I turned around, and with my trusty AR, I managed to buy him just... enough... time.

After that we looked up how to do it and were like "oh, dur, invisibility."

Nothing has even come close to matching the feeling of going into the Vault of Glass completely blind with the rest of team Extra Virgin and slowly solving each piece of the puzzle to eventually find and defeat Atheon himself.

I still get a chuckle out of the fact that we spent hours getting through the Gorgon maze that first time, but now get through it in less than a minute :p
