The idea that audiences identify more strongly with a silent protagonist because they can fill in any voice they like... is nonsense.

Of course it is. But when you don't have a silent protagonist, you run into him saying things that you wouldn't, pulling you out of the narrative to some extent. Like when your Guardian fails to ask any questions at the beginning of Destiny. It totally brought me out of the moment. Like what, that non explanation was enough to get you to want to pick up a gun and go to work?
