There is no reason to shoot the little blights. Killing the taken that spawn in them advances the event normally. You have to step in and out of the blight bubble to get a buff to damage the big one to start the heroic event. The buff lasts 4 seconds.
It's not as well designed trigger as the other events. You have to ignore the enemies standing right next to you shoot a big ball in the sky.
